Radiation measurements from polar and geosynchronous satellites [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
The following topics are discussed: (1) cloud effects in climate determination; (2) annual variation in the global heat balance of the earth; (3) the accuracy of precipitation estimates made from passive microwave measurements from satellites; (4 ...

Stratosphere-troposphere transport in a numerical simulation of midlatitude convection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The transport of stratospheric air deep into the troposphere via convection is investigated numerically using the UK Met Office Unified Model. A convective system that formed on 27 June 2004 near southeast England, in the vicinity an upper level ...

Impacts of precipitation uncertainty on hydrological ensemble simulations over the Ganjiang River basin

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Study region: The Ganjiang River basin (113°−117°E, 24°−30°N; 83,374 km2) is a large watershed with complex topography in the Poyang Lake basin in Jiangxi province, China. Study focus: This study evaluates three quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs)

Sensitivity of flower trade‐wind cloud organisation to mesoscale atmospheric heterogeneities

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Trade‐wind cloud organisation is insensitive to dynamical and thermal heterogeneities but very sensitive to humidity mesoscale heterogeneities, especially in the cloud layer, where they form moist patches, and not in the sub‐cloud layer. Clouds and rain develop in moist patches, then cold pools develop progressively, initiating mesoscale circulations ...

Real-time national GPS networks: Opportunities for atmospheric sensing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Real-time national Global Positioning System (GPS) networks are being established in a number of countries for atmospheric sensing. UCAR, in collaboration with participating universities, is developing one of these networks in the United States.

Windstorm Extremes in a Warmer World: Raising the Bar for Destruction

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Extratropical cyclones occasionally escalate into devastating windstorms in Western Europe, causing damages worth billions of euros. However, their response to anthropogenic climate change remains uncertain, primarily due to limitations of coarse ...

The characteristics of squall lines in the Southeast Asia region

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Squall lines over the Maritime Continent were analysed using 20 years of IMERG GPM data and classified into four regional clusters. Significant regional differences were found in their size, intensity, lifespan, and propagation. Nighttime squall lines are primarily driven by the convergence of opposing offshore flows and the convergence of monsoonal ...

On the measurement of vertical velocity by MST radar [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
An overview is presented of the measurement of atmospheric vertical motion utilizing the MST radar technique. Vertical motion in the atmosphere is briefly discussed as a function of scale.

Raindrop Size Distributions and Rain Characteristics Observed by a PARSIVEL Disdrometer in Beijing, Northern China

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
Fourteen-month precipitation measurements from a second-generation PARSIVEL disdrometer deployed in Beijing, northern China, were analyzed to investigate the microphysical structure of raindrop size distribution and its implications on polarimetric radar

Simulating the year to minute wind spectrum with mesoscale‐coupled large‐eddy simulations

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We coupled a large‐eddy simulation (resolution 50 m) to a mesoscale model (resolution 2 km), which takes boundary conditions from the ERA5 reanalysis. When using a large enough mesoscale domain (𝒪(1000 km)), the simulation setup can reproduce the observed temporal wind spectrum reasonably at all scales between one year and one minute. Furthermore, such
