Pleural mesotheliomas are uncommon tumors. Correct diagnosis of the benign variant is rarely made preoperatively, and resection is the treatment of choice and is curative. Malignant pleural mesotheliomas are locally aggressive and difficult to treat. They may be seen clinically as localized pleural tumors or as diffuse pleural disease with effusion and

Peritoneal mesothelioma is usually a rapidly fatal primary peritoneal surface malignancy with a median survival time of less than 1 year, mainly because of lack of effective treatment. The incidence is approximately one per 1,000,000; approximately one fifth to one third of all mesotheliomas are peritoneal.

Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive, treatment-resistant tumour, which is increasing in frequency throughout the world. Although the main risk factor is asbestos exposure, a virus, simian virus 40 (SV40), could have a role. Mesothelioma has an unusual molecular pathology with loss of tumour suppressor genes being the predominant pattern of lesions,

Human Pathology, 1977
The cytohistology in 82 cases diagnosed as malignant peritoneal mesothelioma was correlated with available clinical and gross pathologic information. The cases were then evaluated as to ceratainty of diagnosis. The material had come from a large number of sources, most of it having been traced by a history of occupational exposure to asbestos.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive neoplasm that rapidly spreads within the confines of the abdominal cavity to involve most accessible peritoneal and omental surfaces. Current treatment options are unsatisfactory, and new approaches are needed.

Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2009Malignant pleural mesothelioma continues to be a challenge. The diagnosis and treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma requires a multidisciplinary approach. The diagnosis is best made by thoracoscopic biopsy and the aid of immunohistochemistry. Molecular studies identified inactivation of the neurofibromatosis-2 gene and INK4alpha/ARF

Metastases in pleural mesothelioma usually occur late in the disease process. Diffuse involvement of the lung parenchyma is rare. A patient with miliary pulmonary parenchymal involvement with malignant mesothelioma is described. To our knowledge, this represents the first such case reported.

Clinical Radiology, 1980
The clinical and radiological features of peritoneal mesothelioma in four patients with an industrial history of asbestos exposure are described. The radiological features of intestinal obstruction, soft tissue masses and displacement and infiltration of bowel are stressed. A normal chest radiograph does not exclude the diagnosis.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm often related to previous asbestos exposure. In 14 cases the diagnosis before surgery was virtually impossible, as patients presented with vague abdominal complaints and nonspecific physical examination findings. Laboratory testing (including computed tomography) was of no added diagnostic help.

Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine, 1999
The increasing incidence of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), better knowledge of its pathogenesis with a strong implication of asbestos fibers, and some promising therapeutic results have led to a new interest in the management of patients with this disease.
