Comparison of Spatio‐Temporal Dynamics and Composition in Size‐Fractionated and Unfractionated Northwestern Atlantic Microbial Communities

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 1, February 2026.
Size fractionation differentiates large, particle‐associated microbes from small, free‐living ones. We show that pooling size‐fractionated marine samples, normalised by their DNA concentration, either before or after sequencing produces community profiles nearly identical to unfractionated samples.

The Geography of Mediterranean Benthic Communities Under Climate Change

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 2, February 2026.
We employed Species Distribution Models with environmental variables from state of the art physical and biogeochemical marine models and a large database of species records to project the current and future distributions of ~350 benthic species in the Mediterranean Sea.

To VAE or not to VAE: outcomes of radial scars/complex sclerosing lesions and papillary lesions without atypia in the King's College Hospital breast service (2017–2023)

open access: yesHistopathology, Volume 88, Issue 3, Page 583-590, February 2026.
Radial scars/complex sclerosing lesions (RS/CSL) without atypia have a low upgrade rate (1%) and could possibly be monitored radiologically, thus avoiding excision. Papillary lesions without atypia have a higher upgrade rate (4%) and should continue to undergo vacuum excision until we better understand these heterogeneous lesions.

When Good Fit Goes Bad: Identifying and Minimising Overfitting in Ecological Niche Models

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim To synthesise current understanding of overfitting as a pervasive and often underdiagnosed problem in correlative ecological niche models (ENMs), and to assess its consequences for model interpretation, generalisation and transferability under contemporary data and methodological practices. Location Worldwide.

Molecular mechanisms of plant NLR activation and signalling

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 125, Issue 3, February 2026.
SUMMARY Plants rely on NLRs (nucleotide‐binding leucine‐rich repeat receptors) to recognise effector proteins secreted by pathogens into plant cells and to deliver disease resistance. Plant NLRs are broadly characterised by their N‐terminal domains, which include the TIR (Toll/interleukin‐1 receptor) and the CC (coiled‐coil) domains.
