Direct measurement of directional disorder for ciliary metachronal wave

2001 Conference Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2005
The interrelationship of cilia and the directional disorder of the ciliary metachronal wave were analyzed using digital microscopic images. The degree of synchronization between ciliary beats was determined by the correlation. factor between two different spots. Principal axes of inertia were applied to find out the uniphase directions of beating cilia.

Characterization of metachronal wave in beating cilia: Distribution of phases in space

Biorheology, 1989
We have examined phase differences between beating cilia measured in different directions on the surface. The measurements were performed on tissue cultures taken from frog palate epithelium. This experiment was based on a method developed earlier, which measures simultaneously scattered light from two different and relatively small areas.

Influence of metachronal wave on hyperbolic tangent fluid model with inclined magnetic field

International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics (IJGMMP), 2019
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the theoretical study of a nonlinear problem of cilia induced flow by considering the fluid as anincompressible non-Newtonian fluid (hyperbolic tangent fluid) model by means of ciliated walls. The leading equations

Direct measurement of the velocity of the metachronal wave in beating cilia

Biorheology, 1987
Recently a computerized electro-optical method was developed which enables one to simultaneously measure the frequency and the wavelength of the metachronal waves in beating cilia. The method is based on measurement of scattered light from two areas at a given distance apart.

Structure and function of the metachronal wave in Tubifex tubifex spermatozeugmata (Annelida, Oligochaeta)

Journal of Ultrastructure and Molecular Structure Research, 1988
The spermatozeugmata of Tubifex tubifex are bundles of spermatozoa, stored in the sperma thecae and composed of two types of sperm cell s. The eupyrene, fertilizing , spermatozoa are stored parallel to the centrai axial cylinder, whereas the oligopyrene spermatozoa are helically arranged in the cortex. The main portions of their tails are connected by

Modeling of a propulsion mechanism for swimming microrobots inspired by ciliate metachronal waves

2012 4th IEEE RAS & EMBS International Conference on Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics (BioRob), 2012
The envisioned applications of microrobots in bodily fluids have raised the demand for effectively swimming microdevices. Microorganisms have become a source of inspiration because their mechanisms of propulsion are effective at low-Re. We investigated the theoretical performance of swimming microrobots implementing propulsion inspired by metachronal ...

Heat transfer analysis of viscoelastic fluid flow due to metachronal wave of cilia

, 2014
This study describes ciliary motion on the transport of fluids in human body with heat transfer. The mathematical model of the flow of a Jeffrey fluid in a tube of finite length is considered due to metachronal wave of cilia motion.

Directional disorder of ciliary metachronal waves using two-dimensional correlation map

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 2002
The interrelationship of cilia and the order of wave directions are important factors that determine the effectiveness of cilia to transport materials in mucociliary systems of the respiratory tract. The interrelationship of cilia and the directional disorder of ciliary metachronal wave were analyzed using digital microscopic images.

Hydrodynamic synchronization of elastic cilia: How surface effects determine the characteristics of metachronal waves.

Physical Review E
Cilia are hairlike microactuators whose cyclic motion is specialized to propel extracellular fluids at low Reynolds numbers. Clusters of these organelles can form synchronized beating patterns, called metachronal waves, which presumably arise from ...
