Response of Fecal Bacteria and Fungi to Tannin‐Rich Diets in Sika Deer (Cervus nippon): Evidence from Both Feeding Experiments and Field Investigations

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Feeding with tannin‐rich diets altered the fecal microbial composition and increased the relative abundance of tannin‐degrading microbes. We hypothesize that fecal bacteria and fungi may play important roles in helping herbivores adapt to tannin‐rich diets but respond to different tannin concentrations varies.

wholeskim: Utilising Genome Skims for Taxonomically Annotating Ancient DNA Metagenomes

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Inferring community composition from shotgun sequencing of environmental DNA is highly dependent on the completeness of reference databases used to assign taxonomic information as well as the pipeline used. While the number of complete, fully assembled reference genomes is increasing rapidly, their taxonomic coverage is generally too sparse to

Enrichment of Helminth Mitochondrial Genomes From Faecal Samples Using Hybridisation Capture

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT New approaches are urgently needed to enrich rare or low‐abundant DNA in complex samples. Soil‐transmitted helminths (STHs) inhabit heterogeneous environments, including the gastrointestinal tract of their host as adults and are excreted as eggs and larvae in faeces, complicating our understanding of their biology and the use of genetic tools ...

Refining Zooplankton Diet Composition Studies Over Short and Long Time Scales by Combining 18S Metabarcoding With Fatty Acid Analyses

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Understanding diet composition is essential for unravelling trophic interactions in aquatic ecosystems. DNA metabarcoding, utilising various variable regions of the 18S rRNA gene, is increasingly employed to investigate zooplankton diet composition.
