The s-Process Nucleosynthesis in Extremely Metal-Poor Stars as the Generating Mechanism of Carbon Enhanced Metal-Poor Stars [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 14th International Symposium on Nuclei in the Cosmos (NIC2016), 2017
The origin of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars plays a key role in characterising the formation and evolution of the first stars and the Galaxy since the extremely-poor (EMP) stars with [Fe/H] \leq -2.5 share the common features of carbon enhancement in their surface chemical compositions.

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Early r-process Enrichment and Hierarchical Assembly Across the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Dwarf galaxies like Sagittarius (Sgr) provide a unique window into the early stages of galactic chemical evolution, particularly through their metal-poor stars.

Chemical constraints on the formation of the Galactic thick disk

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
We highlight some results from our detailed abundance analysis study of 703 kinematically selected F and G dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood. The analysis is based on spectra of high-resolution (R = 45000 to 110 000) and high signal-to-noise (S/N ...

Multiple Stellar Populations in Metal-poor Globular Clusters with JWST: A NIRCam View of M92

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Recent work on metal-intermediate globular clusters (GCs) with [Fe/H] = −1.5 and −0.75 has illustrated the theoretical behavior of multiple populations in photometric diagrams obtained with the JWST.

Carbon and oxygen in metal-poor halo stars [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2019
Carbon and oxygen are key tracers of the Galactic chemical evolution; in particular, a reported upturn in [C/O] towards decreasing [O/H] in metal-poor halo stars could be a signature of nucleosynthesis by massive Population III stars. We reanalyse carbon, oxygen, and iron abundances in 39 metal-poor turn-off stars.

[O/Fe] Estimates for Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor Stars from Near-IR Spectroscopy

open access: yes, 2011
We report on oxygen abundances determined from medium-resolution near-IR spectroscopy for a sample of 57 carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey.

Cellular liquid biopsy provides unique chances for disease monitoring, preclinical model generation and therapy adjustment in rare salivary gland cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We quantified and cultured circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of 62 patients with various cancer types and generated CTC‐derived tumoroid models from two salivary gland cancer patients. Cellular liquid biopsy‐derived information enabled molecular genetic assessment of systemic disease heterogeneity and functional testing for therapy selection in both ...

Origin of α-poor Very Metal-poor Stars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Among very metal-poor (VMP) stars, α -poor VMP ( α -PVMP) stars that have subsolar values of [X/Fe] for Mg and other α elements are rare and are thought to have been formed from gas polluted by Type 1a supernova (SN 1a). However, recent analyses indicate

The Frequency of Carbon Stars among Extremely Metal-poor Stars [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2005
We demonstrate that there are systematic scale errors in the [Fe/H] values determined by the Hamburg/ESO Survey (and by inference by the HK Survey in the past) for certain extremely metal poor highly C-enhanced giants. The consequences of these scale errors are that a) the fraction of carbon stars at extremely low metallicities has been overestimated ...
