The Simulation of Metal Foams Forming Processes

Key Engineering Materials, 2011
Metal foams are two-phase compounds of a gas and a solid with several interesting physical and mechanical properties; in particular they have very low density, good rigidity, excellent energy absorption, high vibration damping. At now, the final shape of foamed devices is directly obtained through the foaming process itself and no further shaping steps

Heat Transfer Characterization of Metallic Foams

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2005
Gas−solid heat transfer coefficients were determined in open-celled metal foams as part of a study aimed at evaluating the application of metal foams as catalyst supports in gas−solid catalytic processes with short contact times and high reaction rates, typically controlled by diffusional mass transport.

Fracture of Metal Foams: In‐situ Testing and Numerical Modeling

Advanced Engineering Materials, 2004
AbstractThis paper is on a combined experimental/modeling study on the tensile fracture of open‐cell foams. In‐situ tensile tests show that individual struts can fail in a brittle or ductile mode, presumably depending on the presence of casting defects. In‐situ single strut tests were performed, enabling observation of deformation and fracture behavior

Production of Metallic Foams From Ceramic Foam Precursors

Advanced Engineering Materials, 2004
AbstractA process has been developed for obtaining closed cell metallic foams using a ceramic foam precursor. In this approach, the major constituent of the ceramic foam precursor is iron oxide (Fe2O3), which is mixed with various foaming/setting additives. The mixture sets rapidly at room temperature to stabilize the foam generated by hydrogen release.

INFLUENCE OF FOAMING TEMPERATURE ON MORFOLOGY OF METAL FOAMS

2015
Metal foams are a new type and form of material which posses a high porosity. Their structure is one of the most important prerequisites that determine the properties and application possibilities. The shape of the structure and its influence on the properties have not been fully studied especially when it comes to new production techniques that are ...

Metal Matrix Composites and Foamed Metals

1998
Material development is presented with the aim of increasing the mechanical properties of light metals with respect to their mass density. Processing and properties of particulate as well as of continuous fibre reinforced aluminium and magnesium matrix alloys are described.
