Aperiodic metal–organic frameworks

open access: yesChemical Science, 2020
This perspective discusses progress and future directions in metal–organic frameworks with aperiodic structures. Reported quasicrystalline and incommensurate materials are presented, and pathways towards designing new such materials are provided.

Metal-organic framework crystal-glass composites

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
The formation of composite materials has been widely exploited to alter the chemical and physical properties of their components. Here the authors form metal–organic framework (MOF) crystal–glass composites in which a MOF glass matrix stabilises the open

High-performance polysulfone/NH2-MIL-125 membranes for the rejection of toxic metals in aqueous solutions [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Environmental Technology
Water contamination is a significant environmental issue, and it is crucial to develop innovative technologies to address this problem. One such technology is the use of nanomaterials in polymeric membranes, which can help to purify water by eliminating ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Characterisation of metal organic frameworks for adsorption cooling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Silica gel/water adsorption cooling systems suffer from size, performance and cost limitations. Therefore, there is a need for new adsorbent materials that outperform silica gel.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Origamic metal-organic framework toward mechanical metamaterial

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Origami, known as paper folding has become a fascinating research topic recently. Origami-inspired materials often establish mechanical properties that are difficult to achieve in conventional materials.
