Development of metal oxide varistor element for power systems
Proceedings of IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 2002A highly nonlinear arrester can improve the insulation coordination of electrical substations and reduce the basic impulse level of power systems. Metal oxide varistors with zinc oxide as one of their constituents are used as advanced protective devices for power systems against transient overvoltages.

Barrier voltage measurement in metal oxide varistors
Journal of Applied Physics, 1976A combination of electrical and ceramic microstructural data has been used to determine the voltage drop across the ZnO-intergranular barrier in some simple and multicomponent ZnO-based varistors at the onset of high non-Ohmicity. The data are obtained by measuring the varistor breakdown field (V/mm) and average grain size of the conductive ZnO matrix ...

High Voltage Metal Oxide Varistors for Surge Protection
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2008<div class="htmlview paragraph">Zinc oxide based metal oxide varistors (MOV) are widely used electrical surge protection components. Modern high power, high-density electronics post more requirements such as smaller footprints, higher current density and higher nonlinearity on MOVs.

Research and Developpment of a new Material for Metal Oxide Varistors
2018 IEEE International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering and 2018 IEEE Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Europe (EEEIC / I&CPS Europe), 2018Metal Oxide Varistors are, from the chemical point of view, ceramics, acting as n-semiconductors and having a poly-crystalline and complex structure. The main application of these power electronic devices is for construction of overvoltage protection equipment (for every voltage level), because of some advantages like: an increased level of non ...

A new component - the metal oxide varistor suppressor
1972 IEEE Power Processing and Electronics Specialists Conference, 1972The paper deals with the novel aspects of a newly developed transient voltage suppressor. Details of its operation, fabrication and characterization are given. Its performance is compared against the more familiar devices currently used for transient voltage protection including devices such as spark gaps, zeners and selenium suppressors.

Grain Resistivity and Conduction in Metal Oxide Varistors
1986Metal oxide varistors are ceramic devices with highly nonlinear current-voltage characteristics similar to back-to-back Zener diodes.1−4 Typical I-V characteristics for a metal oxide varistor at 77 K and for a small range of temperatures near 300 K are shown in Fig. 1. They are produced by sintering ZnO powder together with small amounts (1 to 10 mole %
