Metals have not kept pace. In order to optimize properties of ceramic-metal composites (cermets) both constituents need to be of similar size.

The reduction of various zirconium compounds with calcium which produced the first metal as a powder continues as a process to produce zirconium powders for pyrotechnic and cartridge priming compounds.
