Atom size electron vortex beams with selectable orbital angular momentum

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The decreasing size of modern functional magnetic materials and devices cause a steadily increasing demand for high resolution quantitative magnetic characterization.

Effect of recycling on the mechanical properties and formability of sheet metal [PDF]

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences
This technical note analyses the effect of recycling on the mechanical and forming behaviour of two aluminium alloys (5xxx and 6xxx series) and a low-carbon high-formability steel grade, three of the most widely used sheet metal products in various ...

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Thermoreflectance Detection of Point Defects Resulting from Focused Ion Beam Milling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Focused ion beam (FIB) milling is a common tool for nanoscale material processing, however irradiation damage, redeposition, and contamination can occur. We use several characterization tools to show FIB‐induced effects beyond 1 mm from the milled area.

Unraveling the role of relaxation and rejuvenation on the structure and deformation behavior of the Zr-based bulk metallic glass Vit105

open access: yesMaterials Today Advances
The influence of relaxation and rejuvenation on the deformation behavior of the Zr-based bulk metallic glass Vit105 (Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5) was investigated, where a well-defined thermal history was systematically introduced by thermal treatments ...

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Effect of heat treatment on deformation mechanisms in Mg–10Gd during tensile load studied by acoustic emission tests

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Materials
One of the most promising materials for temporary bone implants is magnesium alloyed with rare-earth elements. Its degradation behaviour strongly depends on the microstructure, which is determined by material processing.

Optimized Effective Potential Model for the Double Perovskites Sr2-xYxVMoO6 and Sr2-xYxVTcO6

open access: yes, 2011
In attempt to explore half-metallic properties of the double perovskites Sr2-xYxVMoO6 and Sr2-xYxVTcO6, we construct an effective low-energy model, which describes the behavior of the t2g-states of these compounds.

Experimental Evaluation of 100Cr6 Steel Microindented Surfaces Under Lubricated Nonconformal Point Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting
