Is the metallicity of their hosts a good measure of the metallicity of Type Ia supernovae? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The efficient use of Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) for cosmological studies requires knowledge of any parameter that can affect their luminosity in either systematic or statistical ways.

Additive Manufacturing of Hot Work Tool Steel by Laser Powder Bed Fusion Utilizing Powder Mixtures Including Grinding Chips: Assessing Chemical Homogeneity and Achievable Hardness

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Grinding chips of high‐alloyed steel are prepared to be admixed to a starting powder mixture for laser powder bed fusion. A three‐stage preparation is performed, including washing in acetone, magnetic separation, and ball milling. The addition of 30% of grinding chips to the powder mixture allows the fabrication of dense samples.

Metallicity gradients through disk Instability: A simple model for the Milky Way's boxy bulge

open access: yes, 2013
Observations show a clear vertical metallicity gradient in the Galactic bulge, which is often taken as a signature of dissipative processes in the formation of a classical bulge. Various evidence shows, however, that the Milky Way is a barred galaxy with

Are the Effects of Structure Formation Seen in the Central Metallicity of Galaxy Clusters? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A sample of 46 nearby clusters observed with Chandra is analyzed to produce radial density, temperature, entropy and metallicity profiles, as well as other morphological measurements.

Recent Advancements in Bulk Processing of Rare‐Earth‐Free Hard Magnetic Materials and Related Multiscale Simulations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article provides an overview of recent advancements in bulk processing of rare‐earth‐free hard magnetic materials. It also addresses related simulation approaches at different scales. The research on rare‐earth‐free magnetic materials has increased significantly in recent years, driven by supply chain issues, environmental and social concerns, and

Galaxy Mergers and the Mass-Metallicity Relation: Evidence for Nuclear Metal Dilution and Flattened Gradients from Numerical Simulations

open access: yes, 2010
Recent results comparing interacting galaxies to the mass-metallicity relation show that their nuclear oxygen abundances are unexpectedly low. We present analysis of N-body/SPH numerical simulations of equal-mass mergers that confirm the hypothesis that ...

The effect of metallicity on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation from a Baade-Wesselink analysis of Cepheids in the Galaxy and in the Small Magellanic Cloud [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
(ABRIDGED) We have applied the near-IR Barnes-Evans realization of the Baade-Wesselink method as calibrated by Fouque & Gieren (1997) to five metal-poor Cepheids with periods between 13 and 17 days in the Small Magellanic Cloud as well as to a sample of ...

Challenges during Flash Lamp Annealing of Aerosol‐Deposited Barium Titanate Films

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aerosol deposition is used to rapidly deposit barium titanate films with thicknesses ranging from 2 to 16 μm at room temperature, eliminating the need for further densification. However, to recover the electromechanical properties, annealing is required, which limits the usage of temperature‐sensitive substrates.

A Possible Correlation between Metallicity and Near-IR Color for Late-M and L Dwarfs

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We examine the relationship between metallicity and J − K color for 64 benchmark late-M and L dwarfs, all of which are wide companions to higher-mass stars, and six of which are new discoveries.

Inhomogeneous strain-induced half-metallicity in bent zigzag graphene nanoribbons

open access: yesnpj Computational Materials, 2017
Half-metallicity: Strain-induced spin-splitting in graphene nanoribbons Inhomogenous strain could cause the charge carriers in zigzag graphene nanoribbons to become fully spin-polarized.
