Neuromorphic metasurface [PDF]

open access: yesPhotonics Research, 2019
Metasurfaces have been used to realize optical functions such as focusing and beam steering. They use subwavelength nanostructures to control the local amplitude and phase of light. Here we show that such control could also enable a new function of artificial neural inference.

Pushing the Limits of Functionality‐Multiplexing Capability in Metasurface Design Based on Statistical Machine Learning

open access: yesAdvances in Materials, 2022
As 2D metamaterials, metasurfaces provide an unprecedented means to manipulate light with the ability to multiplex different functionalities in a single planar device.

Temperature invariant metasurfaces

open access: yesHigh Contrast Metastructures XII, 2023
Abstract Thermal effects are well known to influence the electronic and optical properties of materials through several physical mechanisms and are the basis for various optoelectronic devices. The thermo-optic (TO) effect, the refractive index variation with temperature (dn/dT), is one of the most common mechanisms used for tunable ...

Bipartite Dielectric Huygens' Metasurface for Anomalous Refraction [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Scr. 98 115539, 2023, 2023
Huygens' metasurfaces - fundamentally based on Schelkunoff's equivalence principle, Huygens' metasurfaces consist of a two-dimensional array of Huygens' sources formed by co-located orthogonal electric and magnetic dipoles. Such metasurfaces provide electric and magnetic responses to an incoming electromagnetic (EM) wave, leading to unidirectional ...

Mechanochromic Reconfigurable Metasurfaces [PDF]

open access: yesAdvanced Science, 2019
AbstractThe change of optical properties that some usually natural compounds or polymeric materials show upon the application of external stress is named mechanochromism. Herein, an artificial nanomechanical metasurface formed by a subwavelength nanowire array made of molybdenum disulfide, molybdenum oxide, and silicon nitride changes color upon ...

Metasurface-driven full-space structured light for three-dimensional imaging

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Structured light (SL)-based depth-sensing technology illuminates the objects with an array of dots, and backscattered light is monitored to extract three-dimensional information.

Coherent retroreflective metasurfaces [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Research, 2021
Inhomogeneous metasurfaces have shown possibilities for unprecedented control of wave propagation and scattering. While it is conventional to shine a single incident plane wave from one side of these metastructures, illuminating by several waves simultaneously from both sides may enhance possibilities to control scattered waves, which results in ...

Shaping elastic wavefront through zigzag-folded metasurfaces

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2023
We present a reconfigurable elastic metasurface design composed of an array of zigzag-folded sheets with parallel corrugations to control the wavefront of the refracted A0 Lamb mode wave.

Metasurface-enabled on-chip multiplexed diffractive neural networks in the visible [PDF]

open access: yesLight: Science & Applications, 2021
Replacing electrons with photons is a compelling route toward high-speed, massively parallel, and low-power artificial intelligence computing. Recently, diffractive networks composed of phase surfaces were trained to perform machine learning tasks ...
