Modelling the influence of soil moisture on the Turkana jet
High‐resolution convection‐permitting experiments demonstrate that the Turkana jet is sensitive to soil moisture variations. When examining realistic dry and wet conditions, dry soils amplify a surface‐induced thermal low, which intensifies the along‐channel pressure gradient and strengthens the Turkana jet.

Local identification of equatorial mixed Rossby–gravity waves
A method for the local identification of mixed Rossby–gravity (MRG) waves at specific longitudes is proposed. The technique jointly identifies eastward mixed Rossby–gravity (EMRG) and westward mixed Rossby–gravity (WMRG) waves. Comparison with global identification methods already found in the literature shows very good accuracy of the newly developed ...

Air–sea feedback in the northeastern tropical Atlantic in boreal summer at intraseasonal time‐scales
This study investigates air–sea interactions in the northeastern tropical Atlantic at intraseasonal time‐scales, focusing on the feedback between sea‐surface temperature (SST) and surface winds. It finds that trade wind anomalies drive SST changes, creating a feedback loop that lasts 2–3 weeks.

ampycloud: an open-source algorithm to determine cloud base heights and sky coverage fractions from ceilometer data [PDF]
Ceilometers are used routinely at aerodromes worldwide to derive the height and sky coverage fraction of cloud layers. This information, possibly combined with direct observations by human observers, contributes to the production of meteorological ...

Links between hail hazard and climate modes of variability across Australia
Climate modes of variability influence hail‐prone atmospheric conditions, but links between these drivers and hail hazard across Australia have not been well constrained. We examine relationships between the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and proxy‐derived hail‐prone days across the ...

THz spectroscopy of the atmosphere for climatology and meteorology applications [PDF]
We present a new satellite-based instrument concept that will enable global measurements of atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles with unprecedented resolution and accuracy, compared to currently planned missions. It will also provide global measurements of essential climate variables related to ice clouds that will better constrain global ...

Cloud microphysical processes and low‐level moisture availability affect the ascent of the warm conveyor belt (WCB) airstream. We quantify the relative influence of perturbations to uncertain cloud microphysical model parameters and environmental conditions in the lower troposphere on WCB ascent, as well as on associated precipitation characteristics ...

Relations for retrieving precipitation and attenuation information from radar measurements play a key role in radar meteorology. The uncertainty in such relations highly affects the precipitation and attenuation estimates.
