Decadal Changes of UV Aerosol Optical Depth in Hobart, Australia Measured With a Brewer MKIII: Relationship to Bushfire Events and Climate Indices

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Monthly average aerosol optical depth at 320 nm obtained with a Brewer MKIII spectrophotometer for Hobart, Australia (42.8806° S, 147.3250° E) over a 21‐year period. There is a linear trend of 15.4% per decade. There are 9 months when the average aerosol optical depth exceeds twice the monthly standard deviation.

Incorporating Crowdsourced Data Into Operational Products: A Perspective From a National Meteorological Service

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Future advances in the fields of meteorology and climate science will require scientists to increasingly strive towards the provision of new high‐resolution services. In this context, the development of new products and services along the weather chain may greatly benefit from the adoption of second‐and‐third‐party data (23PD) as a source of high ...

A Buys Ballot medal for Edward Lorenz : a reflection on the history of the prestigious award and evolving attitudes toward predictability

open access: yes, 2006
Since 1893, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences has awarded, once every 10 years, a golden Buys Ballot Medal to a scientist who has made outstanding contributions to the development of meteorology. The award was instituted in 1888 in honor

I: Remote Spectroscopic Measurements of Atmospheric HDO/H₂O and Column CO₂. II: Interannual Variations of the Earth’s Reflectance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The theme of this thesis is to apply remote sensing data on problems concerning the climate system. It is grouped into two parts. Part I (Chapters 1, 2) is devoted to spectroscopic measurements of HDO, H₂O and column CO₂, and Part II (Chapters 3-5) is ...

Scaling of Short‐Duration, Summer Rainfall Event Temporal Profiles With Warming Over Great Britain

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Temperature scaling has been used to analyse the temporal profiles of short‐duration, summer rainfall events in Great Britain, for sub‐hourly observed and convection‐permitting climate model (CPM) data. Results show an increase with dewpoint temperature of event total rainfall depth, maximum intensity, concentration and front‐loading.

Evaluation of FY-3E, CRA, and ERA5 Temperature and Humidity Profiles over North China in Summer

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Based on summer ground-based microwave radiometer (MWR) observations over North China, this study systematically evaluates the accuracy of temperature and humidity profile products derived from the Vertical Atmospheric Sounding System (VASS) onboard the ...

Tropicalization of the Temperate Zone: Spatiotemporal Variability of Winter Warming and Declining Freeze Days Across the United States

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Unique characteristics of winter daily minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) temperatures and freeze days across the conterminous United States from 1952 to 2024 are examined. Results show spatial heterogeneity in Tmin/Tmax warming rates across the tropical‐temperate transition zone in the southeastern United States, and that the highest temperature on the
