Covariance of the intertropical discontinuity and African easterly jet in Sahelian wet and dry years

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, Volume 152, Issue 777, April 2026 Part B.
Intertropical discontinuity and African easterly jet (AEJ) positions are strongly correlated, with a more pronounced linear relationship across wet years. Surface heat flux anomalies modify low‐level temperature and sensible heat flux gradients that shift the AEJ core south of the gradient maxima in both composites.

Efficient Retrieval of Subpixel Cloud Fraction From Coarse Cloud Masks Using Dual‐Branch Deep Learning

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 2, April 2026.
Abstract Cloud detection is a critical procedure in satellite remote sensing. Most meteorological satellite products provide binary cloud masks, which identify whether a pixel in the satellite image is entirely cloudy or clear‐sky, and the subpixel cloud fraction (CF) of partly cloudy pixels is usually unavailable.

The Predictability of the Southern England 23 October 2022 Severe Downbursts

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, Volume 27, Issue 3, March 2026.
Accurate prediction of damaging straight‐line wind events from convection helps keep people safe. Using four regional ensemble prediction systems, we determine the predictability of the different aspects of the microburst wind potential index (left), which can be used to estimate the spread in expected downburst speed (right).

The Diurnal Cycle of Convective Activity over South Asia as Diagnosed from METEOSAT-5 and TRMM Data

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, 2010
Cloud and precipitation data from satellites were used to characterize the climatological diurnal cycle of convective activity over South Asia. Spatial and temporal variability were investigated using three hourly blackbody brightness temperature (TBB ...

Quantitative Aerosol Optical Depth Detection during Dust Outbreaks from Meteosat Imagery Using an Artificial Neural Network Model

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
This study presents the development of an artificial neural network (ANN) model to quantitatively estimate the atmospheric aerosol load (in terms of aerosol optical depth, AOD), with an emphasis on dust, over the Mediterranean basin using images from ...

Latitudinal variability of surface solar radiation in Moldova

open access: yesMoldavian Journal of the Physical Sciences, 2008
Latitudinal variation of the level of solar radiation incident onto the ground surface over the territory of Moldova is analyzed. Combined solar radiation data from HelioClim-2 data- base comprising of datasets retrieved from METEOSAT satellite high ...

Temporal interpolation in Meteosat images [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The geostationary weather satellite Meteosat supplies us with a visual and an infrared image of the earth every 30 minutes. However, due to transmission error s some images may be missing. European TV weather reports are often supported by such infrared image sequences. The cloud movements in such animated films are perceived as being jerky due to t he
