Recovering Methane from Solid Methane Hydrate with Carbon Dioxide

Angewandte Chemie, 2003
CO2 in, CH4 out! From NMR spectroscopic measurements of composition and kinetics, it can be shown that the recovery of methane from methane hydrate is possible through its reaction with CO2 (see diagram), even though the yield is less than that expected from kinetic and thermodynamic arguments.

Methane Hydrate Drilling Technology

Offshore Technology Conference, 2005
Abstract Most of the world's resources of hydrocarbons energy remain in the form of methane hydrates or clathrates. These exist naturally as frozen crystalline lattice consisting of molecules of water that have formed an open, cage-like lattice that encloses molecules of methane.

Enhanced methane hydrate formation with cyclopentane hydrate seeds

Applied Energy, 2017
Abstract This work presents the kinetic promotion effect of sII cyclopentane (CP) hydrate seeds on sI CH 4 hydrate formation in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solutions. Gas hydrates are one of the promising materials for natural gas storage due to their high volumetric capacity and safety aspect.

Simulations of the methane hydrate/methane gas interface near hydrate forming conditions conditions

Fluid Phase Equilibria, 1996
Abstract Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to probe the interface between type I methane hydrate and methane gas in the temperature range 250–300 K, and at pressures of 1 and 100 MPa. The interface was found to be stable up to 270 K, with the onset of melting occurring more readily at the lower pressure.

Sea Floor Methane Hydrates at Hydrate Ridge, Cascadia Margin

2013
The crest of Hydrate Ridge harbors a variety of gas hydrates in near-surface sediments. Hydrate formation and destruction continuously shape the ridge topography. Interstitial Cl-anomaly patterns in conjunction with video-guided sampling have established that the uppermost sediment column contains several distinct layers of gas hydrate which are ...

Methane recovery from methane hydrate using pressurized CO2

Fluid Phase Equilibria, 2005
Abstract The dynamics of CH 4 replacement in CH 4 hydrate with high-pressure CO 2 was observed with in situ laser Raman spectroscopy at temperatures ranging from 271.2 to 275.2 K and at an initial pressure of 3.25 MPa. The amount of CH 4 hydrate decomposition was found to be almost proportional to that of CO 2 hydrate formation for a series of

Extraction of Methane from Methane Hydrate Using Lasers

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 2003
A new laser tool for the extraction of methane from methane hydrates is proposed, and its superiority over other methods is discussed. The type of laser suitable for the extraction is also discussed, and the chemically pumped oxygen-iodine energy transfer laser (COIL) is found to be the most suitable candidate.

Numerical Simulation of Methane Production from a Methane Hydrate Formation

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2008
This paper describes a one-dimensional model for hydrate dissociation in porous media by the depressurization method. A moving boundary, which separates the total simulation zone into two zones, is used. The governing equations consider the convective-conductive heat transfer and mass transfer in the gas and hydrate zones together with the energy ...

Methane Hydrate at High Pressure

Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1949
Abstract The conditions at which methane and water form solid hydrates have beenextended from 4,000 to 11,200 pounds per sq. in. The curve at high pressure hadbeen in doubt because of Villard's report of a critical decompositiontemperature.

Methane hydrate film growth kinetics

Fluid Phase Equilibria, 2001
Abstract Kinetic parameters for methane hydrate formation were obtained from film growth measurements at the methane–water interface. Experimental data were collected for methane hydrate formation over the pressure and temperature ranges of 3.55–9.06 MPa and 1.0–4.0°C, respectively.
