Electron Bifurcation and Confurcation in Methanogenesis and Reverse Methanogenesis [PDF]
Reduction of the disulfide of coenzyme M and coenzyme B (CoMS–SCoB) by heterodisulfide reductases (HdrED and HdrABC) is the final step in all methanogenic pathways. Flavin-based electron bifurcation (FBEB) by soluble HdrABC homologs play additional roles

Methanogenesis is an anaerobic respiration that generates methane as the final product of metabolism. In aerobic respiration, organic matter such as glucose is oxidized to CO2, and O2 is reduced to H2O. In contrast, during hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, H2 is oxidized to H+, and CO2 is reduced to CH4.

Microplastics and nanoplastics are emerging pollutants that substantially influence biological element cycling in natural ecosystems. Plastics are also prevalent in sewage, and they accumulate in waste‐activated sludge (WAS).

Methyl fluoride affects methanogenesis rather than community composition of methanogenic archaea in a rice field soil. [PDF]
The metabolic pathways of methane formation vary with environmental conditions, but whether this can also be linked to changes in the active archaeal community structure remains uncertain. Here, we show that the suppression of aceticlastic methanogenesis

There is an interest in controlling rumen methanogenesis as an opportunity to both decrease the emissions of greenhouse gases and improve the energy efficiency of rumen fermentation. However, the effects of inhibiting rumen methanogenesis on fermentation

Microbial methanogenesis in the sulfate-reducing zone of surface sediments traversing the Peruvian margin [PDF]
We studied the concurrence of methanogenesis and sulfate reduction in surface sediments (0–25 cm below sea floor) at six stations (70, 145, 253, 407, 990 and 1024 m) along the Peruvian margin (12° S).

Background Enteric methane emissions from dairy cows are an environmental problem as well as a gross feed energy loss to the animal. Methane is generated in the rumen by methanogenic archaea from hydrogen (H2) + carbon dioxide and from H2 + methanol or ...

Current Perspectives on Achieving Pronounced Enteric Methane Mitigation From Ruminant Production
Limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2050 requires achieving net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050 and a strong decrease in methane (CH4) emissions.

Formaldehyde oxidation and methanogenesis [PDF]
Formaldehyde oxidation by cell-free extracts of Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum was shown to drive methanogenesis from CH3-S-coenzyme M or HCHO under a nonreductive atmosphere of N2. Under N2 when HCHO was the sole source of carbon and reducing equivalents in the reaction, it underwent oxidation and reduction events (disproportionation), the sum ...
