Perspectives for Advancing Biotechnological Succinic Acid Production

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 5, May 2026.
Succinic acid is an important molecule for sustainable chemical manufacturing, but its industrial production faces high costs and sustainability challenges, which are linked to feedstocks and excessive acid/base consumption. This opinion explores production routes based on next‐generation feedstocks and low‐pH fermentations to inspire novel cost ...

Energy and Environmental Performance of Biodiesel Derived From Waste Vegetable and Animal Oils: Integrated Energy Balance, Process Optimization, and Feasibility Assessment

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 18, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study demonstrates a highly efficient biodiesel production route from waste vegetable and animal oils, achieving a net energy ratio (NER) of 7.8–8.2 and over 85% greenhouse‐gas reduction. Methanol recovery and optimized logistics enhanced energy efficiency, validating waste‐oil biodiesel as a sustainable circular‐bioeconomy fuel.

Biowaste Composting as a Sustainable Platform for Bacterial CO Production: Evidence From cooS Gene Expression and Microbial Community Profiling

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 18, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study demonstrates, for the first time, the expression of the cooS gene during composting, confirming microbial CO production under mesophilic conditions. The results highlight composting as a novel waste‐to‐biochemicals process, offering a sustainable, low‐carbon pathway for generating carbon monoxide via bacterial CO dehydrogenase activity ...

From External Governance to Energy Diplomacy: The European Pursuit of Green Hydrogen

open access: yesJCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, Volume 64, Issue 3, Page 1135-1159, May 2026.
Abstract Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Union (EU) and its Member States are faced with the double imperative of ensuring energy security whilst reaching decarbonisation goals. A number of authors have suggested that we are observing a geopolitical Commission that is shifting to more active ‘energy diplomacy’, as opposed to its

Permanent Revenue in an Energy‐Exporting Economy: A New Test for Fiscal Equilibrium

open access: yesReview of Development Economics, Volume 30, Issue 2, Page 1102-1119, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Fiscal disequilibrium arises when permanent expenditures (PEXP) exceed permanent revenue (PREV), a frequent risk in energy‐exporting economies reliant on volatile windfall revenues. However, existing research lacks a clear measure of these concepts and an empirical test for fiscal equilibrium.
