Methane-oxidizing bacteria (methanotrophs) are similar biochemically to their methanol-utilizing relatives (see Chapter 5) in that the carbon growth substrate is oxidized to carbon dioxide via formaldehyde at which level various assimilatory pathways are employed to synthesize biomass.
