Aerobic methanotrophy at ancient marine methane seeps: A synthesis

Abstract The molecular fingerprints of the chemosynthesis based microbial communities at methane seeps tend to be extremely well preserved in authigenic carbonates. The key process at seeps is the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), which is performed by consortia of methanotrophic archaea and sulphate reducing bacteria.
