In a steady, two-dimensional flow (Chap. 7) and an unsteady, one-dimensional flow (Chap. 8), the flow velocity and thermodynamic properties are expressed as functions of two independent variables by applying Euler’s equation. In those cases, the differential equation is hyperbolic and can be solved by sequentially solving interactions between ...

The method of characteristics is applied in studying general quasilinear partial differential equations of first order sich as, for example, convection or transport equations. It is shown how the notion of characteristics allows for reducing the considerations to those for nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations.

The governing equations of motion for two and three-dimensional inviscid irrotational supersonic flows are derived. Although these equations are nonlinear, there are unique curves in the physical space, known as characteristics that turn the governing partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations that may be integrated along the ...

This chapter describes a classical technique for constructing solutions of hyperbolic PDEs. The method is applied to linear systems of PDEs and to nonlinear PDE problems. This naturally leads to a discussion of more advanced topics including shocks, Riemann problems and weak solutions.

Periodic method of characteristics
Journal of Computational Physics, 1973Abstract A modification to the method of characteristics (MOC) is described for solving a system of two first order hyperbolic partial differential equations possessing periodic solutions. The condition of the physical system is specified by two boundary conditions at a single spatial location.

Method of characteristic modes
AntennasIn recent years, the number of works on the method of characteristic modes and problems solved with its help has increased significantly, which indicates an awareness of its potential and, in connection with this, a growing interest in this approach.

Generalized characteristic method of elastodynamics
International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1994A generalized characteristic method is developed to solve two-dimensional time-domain elastodynamic problems. It can be seen as the two-dimensional development of the method of characteristics analogous to d'Alembert's solution for one-dimensional problems.
