Assumptions of problem-solving methods

1996
Assumptions of problem-solving methods refer to necessary applicability conditions of problem-solving methods, indicating that a problem-solving method is only applicable to realize a task, if the assumptions are met. In principle, such assumptions may refer to any kind of condition involved in a problem-solving method's applicability, including its ...

A bundle method for solving equilibrium problems

Mathematical Programming, 2007
Basing on the auxiliary problem principle, the authors study a boundle method for solving the nonsmooth convex equilibrium problem: finding \(x^* \in C\) such that \(f(x^*,y) \geq 0 \,\,{\text{for all}}\,\, y \in C\), and prove the convergence theorems for the general algorithm.

A method for computing heuristics in problem solving

Information Sciences, 1979
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to propose a formal framework for structuring and embedding the heuristic information, in order to allow an algorithmic computation, in quite general cases, of the evaluation function f (n) of the classical Hart-Nilsson-Raphael algorithm.

On the concepts of problem and problem-solving method

Decision Support Systems, 1987
Abstract The concepts of problem, problem-solving method, and the application of a problem-solving method to a problem are given precise formulations, based on abstract data types. These formulations are argued to agree with the intuitive understanding of these ideas, thereby formalizing them.

Steps in constructing problem solving methods

1993
We propose a general approach that explicates the construction process of problem solving methods (PSMs) employed in knowledge-based systems. As akey point we employ the notion of a competence theory of a problem solving method. Illustrations are taken from the diagnostic Cover-and-Differentiate method used in MOLE and from various forms of abductive ...

A Method for Solving the Visibility Problem

IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, 1984
Faster solutions to 3-D visibility problems and better distribution of multiprocessor systems can be achieved when this new connectivity data algorithm is used.

Rule-oriented methods in problem solving

Artificial Intelligence, 1973
Abstract A heuristic, in the usual sense and certainly in the sense that this term is used in this paper, is a rough guide or principle, or underlying knowledge which is not expressed explicitly. Heuristic methods for solving problems can involve the incorporation of such knowledge into algorithms.

Demonstration of a problem-solving method

Acta Cybern., 1995
Summary: A program for backtrack seeking is proved here by using deduction rules. The problem of whether a chessboard can be moved over by the knight stepping on every square once and only once, is studied, and is traced back to the theorem of backtrack seeking in two ways. A comparison is made between the programs obtained.

A Method for Solving Transient Diffusion Problems

Numerical Heat Transfer, Part B: Fundamentals, 1986
The solution of transient diffusion in a composite material consisting of several different materials involves solving the Sturm-Liouville problem with discontinuous coefficients. An efficient numerical method and algorithm are presented in this paper for finding eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, and the related coefficients.

Solving distillation problems by terrain methods

Computers & Chemical Engineering, 2004
This paper clearly shows that the recently proposed terrain methodology of Lucia and Yang (2003) can be used to solve steady-state distillation problems in a reliable and efficient manner. Numerical results are presented that show that terrain methods are superior to Newton’s method and homotopy-continuation for distillation examples with multiple ...
