The acid catalyzed sol-gel reaction was used to encapsulate methyl orange pH-indicator into transparent monolithic silica matrices. Tetraethylorthosilicate was used for the entrapment of the methyl orange indicator.

The action spectrum of a tailored azobenzene is shifted toward bio‐optical window through the chemical modification of its singlet and triplet energy levels. Consequently, the bidirectional photo‐switching of azobenzene in physiological conditions is achieved when excited by red and far‐red light, which offers greater tissue penetration.

A modular platform enables the generation of fluorescent metal ion indicators with tunable emission colors and precise subcellular localization.
