The lattice parameter of silicon: a secondary realisation of the metre
Measurement science and technology, 2020The 2019 revision of the International System of Units (SI) linked the seven base units to fundamental constants; only a minor rewording was necessary for the metre whose definition was already linked to the speed of light. However, the largest change in

The metre was originally conceived in 18th-century France as one-ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. The metric system, with its basis on the Earth itself, was intended to be eternal – "for all people, for all time". Ken Alder's fascinating new account of the birth of the metric system claims to explain how "science ...

Metre‐scale cycles in shallow water carbonate successions: Milankovitch and stochastic origins
Sedimentology, 2019Metre‐scale cycles are a common feature in Precambrian and Phanerozoic shallow water carbonate successions, and astronomically forced changes in sea‐level (Milankovitch cycles) may have been an important driver controlling their deposition. Nevertheless,

Abstract An assessment of the metrical quality of poetry is very much related to its ‘performative’ nature. Whether biblical poetry was composed and recited for didactic and reflective purposes, or whether it was composed and sung (perhaps antiphonally) for particular liturgical and musical occasions, it served the same purpose: biblical

Verifying quantum superpositions at metre scales
Nature, 2016While the existence of quantum superpositions of massive particles over microscopic separations has been established since the birth of quantum mechanics, the maintenance of superposition states over macroscopic separations is a subject of modern ...

Perception, 1994
A method of time-series analysis and a time-beating experiment were used to test the structural and perceptual validity of notated metre. Autocorrelation applied to the flow of melodic intervals between notes from thirty fragments of compositions for solo instruments by J S Bach strongly supported the validity of bar length specifications.

MetRe is a prototype interface and service designed to support the metadata revision process. Improving consistency of metadata records within an environment is a common repository management task, due to potential for user error when submitting, as well as of other sources of error, such as systematic error resulting from the chosen deposit process ...
