Critical Limitations in Cryogenic Laser Cooling of Solids: Symmetry‐Related Fluorescence Trapping and Condensation‐Induced Parasitic Heating

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study uncovers two overlooked bottlenecks in cryogenic laser cooling of solids: symmetry‐driven fluorescence trapping and water vapor condensation. We demonstrate that breaking sample symmetry enhances fluorescence escape, while condensation dominates parasitic heating below 135 K.

Control-enhanced non-Markovian quantum metrology

open access: yesCommunications Physics
Quantum metrology promises unprecedented precision of parameter estimation, but it is often vulnerable to noise. While significant efforts have been devoted to improving the metrology performance in Markovian environments, practical control schemes ...

hp-finite element method for simulating light scattering from complex 3D structures

open access: yes, 2015
Methods for solving Maxwell's equations are integral part of optical metrology and computational lithography setups. Applications require accurate geometrical resolution, high numerical accuracy and/or low computation times.

Ultrafast Multilevel Switching and Synaptic Behavior in a Planar Quantum Topological Memristor

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Dry‐transferred Bi2Te3 layers enable a planar quantum topological memristor framework. In‐plane topological surface states facilitate ultrafast & low‐power operations. Coexisting analog and digital modes support current‐controlled multilevel states. PQTM exhibits 105 s retention, 103 cycles endurance, and reproducibility across 24 devices.

Highly sensitive frequency metrology for optical anisotropy measurements

open access: yes, 2010
In this paper we present a novel apparatus aimed at measuring very small birefringences and anisotropies, based on frequency metrology and not on polarimetry as usual.

Metrology Versus Medical Metrology

open access: yes
Metrology aims to provide the reliability and accuracy of all measurements by defining the units (SI and its derivatives), which are the basis of all measurement systems, and to offer them to the use of science and technology. Metrology specializes in three different fields: scientific, legal and industrial metrology.

Tunable Sound Absorption via Evanescent‐Wave Coupling in Asymmetric Bilayer Metasurfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tunable sound absorption is realized through a bilayer metasurface system governed by evanescent‐wave coupling. This work demonstrates that such evanescent‐wave coupling provides a controllable scattering channel that destructively interferes with the specular reflection.
