Grain refinement of Mg-3Y alloy using Mg-10Al2Y master alloy

Journal of Rare Earths, 2021
Abstract The as-extruded Mg-10Al2Y master alloy was chosen as a novel grain refiner for as-cast Mg-3Y alloy. Contrast samples of cast Mg-3Y alloy added with pure Al and Mg-Zr master alloy grain refiners were prepared under the same conditions. In this study, the influence of addition amounts of Al2Y and holding time on grain refinement efficiency as ...

Surface Alloying of Mg Alloys After Surface Nanocrystallization

Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, 2008
Surface nanocrystallization using a surface mechanical attrition treatment effectively activates the surface of magnesium alloys due to the increase in grain boundary diffusion channels. As a result, the temperature of subsequent surface alloying treatment of pure Mg and AZ91 alloy can be reduced from 430 °C to 380 °C.

Understanding the Corrosion of Mg and Mg Alloys

2018
This article summarizes current, fundamental knowledge of the corrosion of magnesium, and highlights some latest developments. Mg is a most reactive metal. The high available reaction energy, and because the simultaneous exchange of two electrons is forbidden by quantum mechanics, means that there is a highly reactive intermediate that can chemically ...

Heterogeneous nucleation of Mg–Al alloys

Scripta Materialia, 2006
Grain size is one of the most important microstructural characteristics determining the mechanical properties and therefore the service performance of polycrystalline materials. Heterogeneous nucleation involves the addition or in situ formation of potent nuclei in the system to promote nucleation events, leading to a fine grain structure.

Trends in the Development of New Mg Alloys

Annual Review of Materials Research, 2008
Advanced Mg alloys require a stable microstructure that maintains good mechanical properties when exposed to high temperatures. On the basis of this demand, the search for new Mg alloys has stimulated the imagination of material scientists. This review's discussion ranges from modifications of commercial Mg-Al- and Mg-Zn-based alloys by Ca and rare ...

Alloying behaviors of AgMg, AuMg and AgAl alloys

Journal of Physics and Chemistry of Solids, 1974
Abstract An expression of the structure-dependent energy of simple metal-noble metal binary alloy is given on the basis of the pseudopotential method. The energy is expressed as a sum of three parts; a band-structure energy, an electrostatic energy and a repulsive overlap energy, each of which is characterized by the usual long-range and short-range ...

Flammability of Mg–X Binary Alloys

Advanced Engineering Materials, 2012
AbstractFlammability of Mg–X alloys was studied for X = Al, Ca, Si, Sn, Sr, La, Mn, Zn, Zr, Ce, Gd, and Nd. One end of a horizontal cylindrical specimen was subjected to a free diffusion liquid petroleum gas (LPG) flame. There was no burning without some melting of the specimen tip.

Metallography of Mg Alloys

2019
Processing and composition determine microstructural properties. To reveal the microstructure, the metallographic investigation is a commonly used method, and therefore, it is a crucial part in the characterization of metals and alloys. Choosing incorrect preparation steps will lead to artefacts and misleading conclusions due to the compositional ...

Thermochemical investigation of Sm–Mg alloys

Calphad, 2014
Abstract The paper focuses on the thermochemical behaviour of the binary Sm–Mg alloys. The enthalpies of formation of the Sm–Mg intermetallic compounds have been determined at 300 K by high temperature direct synthesis calorimetry. The following results in kJ/mole of atoms are reported: −18.5±2 (SmMg), −16.0±2 (SmMg 2 ), −12.0±2 (SmMg 3 ), −8.5±2 ...

High Energy Micro-Arc Alloying of Mg-RE on AZ31 Mg Alloy

Advanced Materials Research, 2011
Mg-RE electrode was used for deposition of micro-arc coatings on AZ31 magnesium alloy upon variation in there different processing parameters(high, low and middle pulsed discharges). Mass transfer trends from electrode to substrate and microstructure of Mg-RE coating on AZ31 substrate were observed. Characterization has been performed by using scanning
