Processing and composition determine microstructural properties. To reveal the microstructure, the metallographic investigation is a commonly used method, and therefore, it is a crucial part in the characterization of metals and alloys. Choosing incorrect preparation steps will lead to artefacts and misleading conclusions due to the compositional ...

Trends in the Development of New Mg Alloys
Annual Review of Materials Research, 2008Advanced Mg alloys require a stable microstructure that maintains good mechanical properties when exposed to high temperatures. On the basis of this demand, the search for new Mg alloys has stimulated the imagination of material scientists. This review's discussion ranges from modifications of commercial Mg-Al- and Mg-Zn-based alloys by Ca and rare ...

Flammability of Mg–X Binary Alloys
Advanced Engineering Materials, 2012AbstractFlammability of Mg–X alloys was studied for X = Al, Ca, Si, Sn, Sr, La, Mn, Zn, Zr, Ce, Gd, and Nd. One end of a horizontal cylindrical specimen was subjected to a free diffusion liquid petroleum gas (LPG) flame. There was no burning without some melting of the specimen tip.

Thermochemical investigation of Sm–Mg alloys
Calphad, 2014Abstract The paper focuses on the thermochemical behaviour of the binary Sm–Mg alloys. The enthalpies of formation of the Sm–Mg intermetallic compounds have been determined at 300 K by high temperature direct synthesis calorimetry. The following results in kJ/mole of atoms are reported: −18.5±2 (SmMg), −16.0±2 (SmMg 2 ), −12.0±2 (SmMg 3 ), −8.5±2 ...

High Energy Micro-Arc Alloying of Mg-RE on AZ31 Mg Alloy
Advanced Materials Research, 2011Mg-RE electrode was used for deposition of micro-arc coatings on AZ31 magnesium alloy upon variation in there different processing parameters(high, low and middle pulsed discharges). Mass transfer trends from electrode to substrate and microstructure of Mg-RE coating on AZ31 substrate were observed. Characterization has been performed by using scanning

Sacrificial Cathodic Protection of Mg Alloy AZ31B by an Mg–5Sn Surface Alloy
2019A solid solution Mg–5Sn alloy is evaluated as a sacrificial anode for the cathodic protection of AZ31B. Uncoupled Mg–5Sn is shown to have superior barrier properties and reduced cathodic kinetics relative to AZ31B. The performance as a sacrificial anode was studied in situ with global and local measurements of galvanic coupling between the Mg–5Sn alloy

AZ91D magnesium alloy and Al metal were bonded successfully at 450 oC with load of 25 or 31 MPa by using Mg-Al eutectic alloy as the solder in atmosphere. The microstructure of the AZ91D/Al joints was characterized by SEM equipped with EDS, and the bond strength was measured through three-point bending test.

Mechanical alloying and milling of Al–Mg alloys
Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 2009Abstract Solid solubility extension of Mg in Al was achieved for the binary Al–Mg system in the range of 10–40 at.% Mg by mechanical alloying of elemental powder mixtures and by mechanical milling of pre-alloyed ingots. No indication for the formation of the equilibrium phases (β-Al3Mg2 and γ-Al12Mg17) after milling was observed.

Corrosion Mechanism of Mg and Mg Alloys
2010Magnesium alloys are very attractive due to their good strength/weight ratio, but magnesium usage has been limited largely due to the poor corrosion properties of magnesium alloys. So understanding their corrosion behaviour is an essential step towards improving their corrosion performance.
