Inexpensive Michelson Interferometer
American Journal of Physics, 1955The construction and operating characteristics of a Michelson interferometer designed on kinematic principles are outlined. The main components are ground steel dowel pins and ball bearings which are commercially available. The construction requires only a moderate amount of mechanical skill.

Absorbing beam splitter in a Michelson interferometer
Applied Optics, 1995The equality of the reflected and the transmitted irradiances by a beam splitter that consists of a thin absorbing coating (typically a metallic film) on a transparent plate is considered. The absorption and the phase difference between the reflected and transmitted fields are also studied.

Michelson interferometer for precision angle measurement
Applied Optics, 1999An angle-measuring technique based on an optical interferometer is reported. The technique exploits a Michelson interferometric configuration in which a right-angle prism and a glass strip are introduced into a probe beam. Simultaneous rotation of both components along an axis results in an optical path difference between the reference and the probe ...

Design for an all-reflection Michelson interferometer
Applied Optics, 1992We present a new design for an all-reflection Michelson interferometer that uses a concave spherical grating in an off-plane Rowland circle configuration.

Amplitude Modulators Based on the Michelson Interferometer
IEEE Transactions on Sonics and Ultrasonics, 1972An amplitude modulator is described in which the modulation is obtained by variation of the phases of two beams with the same direction of polarization but orthogonal directions of propagation in an electrooptic material. The phase modulation is transformed into an amplitude modulation by interfering the two beams using a beam splitter.

Michelson and his interferometer
Physics Today, 1974Albert Abraham Michelson was the first American scientist to win the Nobel Prize, and his career is one of the most fascinating in the entire history of physics. His earliest work was firmly based on the classical physics of geometrical optics—in a precise determination of the velocity of light by an improved Foucault method.

Imaging Michelson interferometers
2013The imaging solid wide-field Michelson (SWFM) interferometer has a performance superior to that of a wide-field birefringent element because of its smaller angle sensitivity and its relative insensitivity to temperature. For these reasons SWFM filter systems were chosen as the imaging spectrometers for the Michelson Doppler Imager on SOHO and for the ...

Michelson Interferometer Spectrometers
2009This very important instrument had its origins in the interferometer introduced by Michelson in 1891 for the examination of high-resolution spectra. It is more often used today in the form of a Twyman-Green interferometer, which is essentially a Michelson interferometer used with collimated light.

Thermoluminescence spectra measured with a Michelson interferometer
International Journal of Radiation Applications and Instrumentation. Part A. Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 1991Abstract A Michelson interferometer was redesigned to prove its capabilities in the measurement of short-lived, low-intensity thermoluminescence spectra. Interferograms are collected during heating up the thermoluminescent probe in a heater plate. A personal computer controls the data acquisition and processes the Fourier transform.
