Acoustic detection of micro-cracks in small electronic devices

Microelectronics Reliability, 2014
Abstract We demonstrate the feasibility of in-situ acoustic detection of micro-cracks in small electronic devices. Applying precisely controlled damage to test vehicles using a nanoindenter, we record brittle fracture of thin layers by means of an ultra-sound piezo sensor, which is able to detect micro-cracks in the moment they emerge.

The influence of micro-cracks on copper extraction by bioleaching

Hydrometallurgy, 2020
Abstract Micro-cracks produced in the crushing stage could improve the permeability and diffusion of leaching solution within the ore particles, which would favor for the leaching process. However, its influence on the extraction of copper by bioleaching has rarely been studied.

Micro-cracking of tooth structure.

American journal of dentistry, 2005
To determine if the cutting procedure utilized in producing a cavity preparation, i.e., a high speed dental handpiece or an Er:YAG laser may be a factor in initiating the formation of micro-cracks during or after preparation of the cavity and before and after placing and curing the dental composite.Class I occlusal and Class II MOD preparations were ...

Observations on the nature of micro-cracking in brittle composites

Journal of Materials Science, 1981
The degree of micro-cracking in BeO-SiC composites due to internal stresses which arise from the mismatch in the coefficients of thermal expansion was monitored by measurements of the thermal diffusivity by the laser-flash technique. The experimental results indicated that micro-cracking was most extensive at approximately 30 and 80 wt% SiC and a ...

On the stress field near the micro-crack tip

Physica Status Solidi (a), 1993
In this paper a molecular dynamic (MD) simulation is conducted to analyze the stress field near a micro-crack tip. The model material for simulation is a single crystal of aluminum. A bulk of 5460 atoms is used to simulate a micro-crack. The interatomic potential of aluminum is calculated by the pseudopotential method of the Krasko-Gurskii model which ...

Imaging of Micro-Cracks by Photo-Displacement Microscopy

IEEE 1984 Ultrasonics Symposium, 1984
Thermal waves are generated using a modulated conductor laser as the heat source. The resulting disturbance is sensed, by means of a HeNe laser probe, which detects the vertical displacement of the surface. The probing laser spot can be coincident with that of the thermal wave generating laser.

Fractal Study for Micro-Crack of Mud-Shale

Key Engineering Materials, 2016
The structure, distribution and evolution of micro-crack within the mud-shale are studied in this paper. The micro-fracture behavior of mud-shale has fractal characteristics. Fractal method is used to quantitative description of the damage evolution behavior of the mud-shale.

Nanoscale experimental study of a micro-crack in silicon

Physica B: Condensed Matter, 2008
Abstract A micro-crack in silicon was experimentally investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The crystal lattice structure of a micro-crack was carefully observed at a HRTEM image scale of approximately 18 nm. The crystal lattice structure of the crack tip region was observed to be regular with good periodicity ...

Temperature-dependent micro crack healing process

Metals and Materials, 1998
The crack healing process is studied theoretically on the basis of the extended the Thomson-Obreimoff model. The system free-energy F as a function of the crack lengthl and temperatureT is calculated using the self-consistent Einstein model. It is found that with the temperature increase, the energy barrier becomes lower and even disappears at the ...
