A Pressure Microsensor Made of Parylene‐C for Use as Medical Implant

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A monolithic parylene‐C pressure sensor with gold strain gauges provides 6.2 μV$\mu{\rm V}$·mmHg$\cdot{\rm mmHg}$−1$^{-1}$ sensitivity. The morphology of a sputtered thin film strain sensor is granular/columnar, which results in a high gauge factor of 7.5. Thermal bonding and parylene‐C coating create a hermetic cavity.

3D Printing of Stretchable, Compressible and Conductive Porous Polyurethane for Soft Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A 3D‐printable porous dopamine‐polyurethane acrylate elastomer results in conductive, stretchable, and compressible structures that can be metallized in situ through catechol‐mediated silver reduction. The resulting material function as both compliant soft robot with a and strain sensors without complex assemblies, enabling fully 3D‐printed soft ...

Tunable Extraordinary Optical Transmission in the Long‐Wavelength Infrared Range Using Electrostatic MEMS Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A MEMS‐integrated metamaterial filter enables continuous, low‐voltage spectral tuning in the long‐wavelength infrared (LWIR). The device employs extraordinary optical transmission in a dual suspended metasurface stack, where electrostatic actuation precisely controls the intermembrane air gap.

Influence of initial micro-crack damage on strength and micro-cracking behavior of an intrusive crystalline rock

open access: yesBulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment, 2018
Rocks inherently contain some micro-cracks. The existence of initial micro-cracks introduces weakness to the rock specimen and hence affects the strength and deformation behavior of rocks. This paper numerically investigates the influence of initial micro-crack damage on the strength and deformation behavior and the associated micro-cracking process of

Effect of a micro-crack on the kinked macro-crack

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2018
Abstract The solution of an infinite plane containing an arbitrarily located micro-crack and a kinked macro-crack is presented based on the distributed dislocation technique (DDT). The stress field, the plastic zone of the macro-crack tip (PZ) and the stress intensity factors at the macro-crack tip (SIFs) are obtained.

Influence of a micro-crack on the finite macro-crack

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2017
Abstract The numerical solution of an infinite elastic plane containing a macro-crack and an arbitrary oriented micro-crack is presented based on the distributed dislocation technique and Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature method, which is verified by finite element method.

A computational model of peridynamic theory for deflecting behavior of crack propagation with micro-cracks [PDF]

open access: yesComputational Materials Science, 2019
The critical effect of micro level defects should be examined at macro level to better understand the fracture behaviors of engineering materials. This study investigates the branching and deflecting behavior of a macro (main) crack in presence of ...

Analysis and simulation of cracks and micro cracks in PV cells

2013 14th International Conference on Thermal, Mechanical and Multi-Physics Simulation and Experiments in Microelectronics and Microsystems (EuroSimE), 2013
The goal in this analysis is to undestand more about the progressing of preexisting cracks in silicon solar cells under different enviromental loads. This enables to estimate critical crack sizes and reduce the losses and to improve realibility. In this work we present a 2D finite element model of encapsulated silicon solar cells containing cracks on ...

Damage and fracture characterization of asphalt concrete mixtures using the equivalent micro-crack stress approach

open access: yesConstruction and Building Materials, 2017
In this paper, a new parameter termed “equivalent micro-crack stress” (σmc) is proposed for the evaluation of the cracking performance of asphalt mixtures with respect to their resistance to the initiation of micro-crack.

Interacting micro-cracks near the tip in the process zone of a macro-crack

Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1987
For a linearly elastic and isotropic solid containing two or more cracks, cavities and other interacting defects of complex geometries, a method called ''the method of pseudo-tractions'' has been recently proposed by the authors [e.g. Int. J. Solids Struct.
