The implementation of discrete demand management algorithms within energy systems modelling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Traditionally, demand side management (DSM) programs have been driven by utilities. With the prospect of growth in the utilization of building-integrated micro-generation, DSM offers opportunities for additional energy savings and CO2 emission reductions

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Study of Inertia and Damping Characteristics of Doubly Fed Induction Generators and Improved Additional Frequency Control Strategy

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Large-scale wind farms connect to the grid and deliver electrical energy to the load center. When a short-circuit fault occurs on the transmission line, there will be an excess of electric power, but the power demand will increase instantaneously once ...

Martian meso/micro-scale winds and surface energy budget [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Regional, diurnal and seasonal variations of surface temperature are particularly large on Mars. This is mostly due to the Martian surface remaining close to radiative equilibrium.

The Growth of Micro-organisms in Relation to their Energy Supply

open access: yesMicrobiology, 1960
SUMMARY: When Streptococcus faecalis was grown anaerobically in a complex medium containing d-glucose, d-ribose or l-arginine as energy source the dry wt. of organism produced was proportional to the concentration of the energy source in the medium. However, S. faecalis will not grow in a defined medium with arginine as the energy source unless glucose

Influence of an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere on Diamond‐Single‐Grain Scratching of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐grain scratching of Ti–6Al–4V is investigated under controlled, oxygen‐free, and ambient atmospheres using a novel experimental setup with in situ high‐speed imaging. The approach enables direct observation of chip formation and adhesion under suppressed oxidation.

Controlling fast transport of cold trapped ions

open access: yes, 2012
We realize fast transport of ions in a segmented micro-structured Paul trap. The ion is shuttled over a distance of more than 10^4 times its groundstate wavefunction size during only 5 motional cycles of the trap (280 micro meter in 3.6 micro seconds ...

Assessing Altered Coating Adhesion on Plasma‐Deoxidized Surfaces Under Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of atmospheric pressure plasma pretreatment in modifying silicon and stainless steel surfaces to improve adhesion. Argon‐hydrogen plasma increases surface roughness and improves adhesion strength, whereas pure argon results in smoother surfaces and structural changes.
