The biology of PKM2 in the metabolism and senescence in diabetic kidney disease

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is one of the most common causes of chronic kidney disease that leads to end‐stage kidney disease, and its progression is closely linked to metabolic stress within renal tubular cells. Under long‐term hyperglycemia, cells shift their glucose metabolism from normal oxidative phosphorylation toward glycolysis.

Study of microalbuminuria and its correlation with glycaemic status in type 2 diabetes mellitus

open access: yesMRIMS Journal of Health Sciences, 2016
Background: It is well established that diabetic nephropathy is a dreaded complication of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. However in the early stages; also known as incipient nephropathy, it can be detected by the presence of microalbuminuria.

The role of zinc in renal pathological changes in diabetic status [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Diabetes mellitus (DM) was the 8th leading cause of death in 2011, resulting in 1.4 million deaths worldwide. One of the complications of DM is chronic kidney disease, which accounts for nearly 44% of all new cases of kidney failure in the US in 2011 ...

Early Progressive Renal Decline Precedes the Onset of Microalbuminuria and Its Progression to Macroalbuminuria

open access: yesDiabetes Care, 2013
OBJECTIVE Progressive decrease in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), or renal decline, in type 1 diabetes (T1D) is observed in patients with macroalbuminuria.

mTOR blockade prevents progressive proteinuria but induces hyperglycaemia in obese Dahl salt‐sensitive rats before puberty

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Previous studies have demonstrated that mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) activity is significantly increased in the kidneys of Dahl salt‐sensitive (SS) rats during the development of renal injury. Therefore, in the present study we examined whether blockade of mTOR with rapamycin inhibits renal injury in Dahl salt‐sensitive leptin receptor

Beyond BMI: Practical Guide for Clinicians to Integrate the Lancet Commission's Obesity Framework and King's Obesity Staging System

open access: yesClinical Obesity, Volume 16, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Body mass index (BMI) on its own is a poor diagnostic and staging tool for obesity because it does not measure health status. The newly published Lancet Clinical Obesity Criteria (LCOC) for defining clinical obesity distinguish preclinical and clinical obesity based on organ or tissue dysfunction.

Liraglutide and renal outcomes in type 2 diabetes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In a randomized, controlled trial that compared liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 analogue, with placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk who were receiving usual care, we found that liraglutide resulted in lower risks ...

The impact of obesity on pregnancy outcomes in women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes across the NSW population: A retrospective cohort study

open access: yesDiabetic Medicine, Volume 43, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Aims To examine differences in pregnancy outcomes between women with type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) and assess the impact of concurrent obesity on adverse perinatal outcomes. Materials and Methods We retrospectively analysed singleton births of nulliparous mothers with T1D and T2D from 2016 to 2020, in New South Wales, Australia.
