Anode potential influences the structure and function of anodic electrode and electrolyte-associated microbiomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Three bioelectrochemical systems were operated with set anode potentials of +300 mV, +550 mV and +800 mV vs. Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE) to test the hypothesis that anode potential influences microbial diversity and is positively associated with ...

Microbial recovery from clot-activating Vacutainers®

open access: yesDiagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, 2016
Biological specimens for microbiological analysis are often collected in BD Vacutainers®, which are not specifically designed for microbial recovery. Bacterial and fungal recovery was analyzed for glass and plastic tubes with or without clot-activating silica. No significant impact was found for the recovery of most bacteria and yeasts tested, however,

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Impact of soil management on the functional activity of microbial communities associated to cork oak rhizosphere [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The microbial ecology of cork oak rhizosphere was investigated using the Biolog community level physiological profile (CLPP) that provides a unique metabolic fingerprint helpful for the characterization of complex microbial communities.

Soil Disturbance Increases Soil Microbial Enzymatic Activity in Arid Ecoregions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Functional diversity of the soil microbial community is commonly used in the assessment of soil health as it relates to the activity of soil microflora involved in carbon cycling.

Impact of intercropping on the coupling between soil microbial community structure, activity, and nutrient-use efficiencies

open access: yesPeerJ, 2019
Sugarcane-soybean intercropping has been widely used to control disease and improve nutrition in the field. However, the response of the soil microbial community diversity and structure to intercropping is not well understood.

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Plant-associated halotolerant bacteria improving growth of Vicia faba L. Mariout-2 under salinity conditions

open access: yesScientific Reports
In this comprehensive investigation, we successfully isolated and characterized 40 distinct plant-associated halotolerant bacteria strains obtained from three halophytic plant species: Tamarix nilotica, Suaeda pruinosa, and Arthrocnemum macrostachyum ...

SmallTalk: a novel small‐sized fusion tag for peptide expression and purification

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The SmallTalk fusion tag allows for the efficient expression and purification of soluble recombinant proteins or peptides in Escherichia coli. Testing with SmallTalk‐GFP confirmed that the proteins were soluble and folded correctly, while SmallTalk‐Bin1b maintained its antimicrobial activity against various bacterial isolates. This streamlined workflow
