Methods for elucidating microbial biomass

open access: yesIRA-International Journal of Management & Social Sciences (ISSN 2455-2267), 2016
<p>The microbial biomass of soil is defined as the part of the organic matter in the soil that constitutes living organisms smaller than the 5-10 mm3. It is generally expressed in the milligrams of carbon per kilogram of soil or micrograms of carbons per gram of dry weight of soil. Typical biomass carbon ranges from 1 to 5%

A Global Methane Observation System to Reduce Uncertainty for Anthropogenic and Natural Sources and Sinks for Detecting and Attributing Climate Feedbacks

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Conceptual illustration of a Global Ecosystem Methane Observing System (GEM‐OS) integrating satellites, aircraft, atmospheric networks, and ecosystem measurements to quantify methane emissions from anthropogenic and natural sources. The multi‐scale observing framework improves source attribution, reduces uncertainty in regional methane budgets, and ...

Revolutionising Agricultural Sustainability: New ‘Furrow Tillage’ can Mitigate Short‐Term Soil‐to‐Atmosphere CO2 Flux and Promote Soil‐Plant‐Microbe Health

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Furrow tillage resolves the conventional‐vs.‐no‐tillage trade‐off by simultaneously cutting CO2 efflux to 2.0–3.0 g C m−2 d−1 and unlocking high nutrient availability for the rice rhizosphere. This scalable agronomic solution strengthens soil health, enhances plant physiology, reshapes microbial metabolism, and shifts paddy systems toward a net ...

Harmonizing Rigidity and Flexibility: Embedding COF Quantum Dots Into Extracellular Matrix Gel as Carbon Monoxide Depot for Acoustically Triggered Time‐Programmable Anti‐Infective Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A rigid‑flexible integrated CO depot is engineered by embedding rigid COFQDs into a flexible ECM gel network. The rigid framework enables high‑capacity CO storage and sonodynamic bacterial killing, while the flexible ECM gel controls sustained CO release, collectively eradicating multidrug‑resistant infection and promoting scarless healing.

Reimagining Lignin Valorization: Synthetic Biology–Enabled Sustainable Aromatic Carbon Biomanufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The diagram illustrates a sustainable model of lignin valorization and carbon cycling based on microbial cell factories. Using lignin as the feedstock, synthetic biology technologies, including depolymerization, cell factory construction, pathway gene module integration, and metabolic network regulation, are applied to convert lignin into bulk ...

Adaptive Responses of Tropical Crops: A Multi‐Scale Omics Integrated Perspective

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tropical crops integrate genomic, morphological, physiological, and ecological adaptations to thrive under extreme and variable environments. This review highlights how natural selection, domestication, and breeding shape stress resilience, resource‐use strategies, and productivity in sugarcane, banana, cassava, rubber and oil palm, offering new routes

The Plant‐to‐Plant Circular Strategy: Coupling Photodegradation and Phytoremediation With Plant‐Based Nanomaterials for Plastic Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Plant‐based nanomaterials derived from alfalfa serve as dual‐function catalysts, coupling photodegradation and phytoremediation to degrade polyethylene under UV‐A light and in soil. The nanomaterials work synergistically with alfalfa and soil microbes, achieving efficient plastic breakdown without trophic transfer.

Estimation of microbial biomass based on water-extractable organic matter from air-dried soils from Japanese forests and pasture

open access: yesDiscover Soil
Water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) obtained from air-dried soil samples can be used to estimate microbial biomass instead of chloroform fumigation extraction (CFE) using fresh, moist soils and toxic solvents. However, the accuracy of such WEOM-based

Seasonal Changes in the Soil Microbiome on Chernozem Soil in Response to Tillage, Fertilization, and Cropping System

open access: yesAgronomy
Soil microbial communities are crucial for ecosystem services, soil fertility, and the resilience of agroecosystems. This study investigated how long-term (31 years) agronomic practices—tillage, NPK fertilization, and cropping system—along with measured ...
