Metabolic similarity and the predictability of microbial community assembly

open access: yes, 2023
AbstractWhen microbial communities form, their composition is shaped by selective pressures imposed by the environment. Can we predict which communities will assemble under different environmental conditions? Here, we hypothesize that quantitative similarities in metabolic traits across metabolically similar environments lead to predictable ...

Microbial community assembly is taxon- and habitat-dependent in an arid inland river basin, Northwest China

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Oasis habitats play a critical role in arid areas, yet little is known regarding microbial community assembly processes and their divergence between oasis and desert habitats in arid inland river basins.

Unveiling Global Diversity of Patescibacteriota and Functional Interactions with Host Microbes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Patescibacteriota represents a diverse group of ultra‐small epibiotic bacteria, which is largely overlooked. By integrating ribosomal protein S3‐based community profiling with MAG‐based metabolic potential analyses, this study provides new insights into their distribution, diversity, and potential interactions with other bacteria across diverse ...

Oral microbial community assembly under the influence of periodontitis

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2017
Several ecological hypotheses (e.g., specific plaque, non-specific plaque and keystone pathogen) regarding the etiology of periodontitis have been proposed since the 1990s, most of which have been centered on the concept of dysbiosis associated with periodontitis.

Engineering Dimensional Configuration of Single‐Atom S‐Cu‐S Sites as Reversible Electron Station for Enhanced Peroxidase‐Mimicking

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
L‐cysteine triggers auto‐assembly of POD‐like 3D biomimetic S‐Cu‐S single‐atom nanozymes on MoS2 (MoCC). MoCC shows 16.3‐fold higher catalytic velocity and 17.9‐fold greater affinity than HRP, enabling efficient •OH generation via enhanced electron inversion and transfer.

Experimental and computational approaches to unravel microbial community assembly

open access: yesComputational and Structural Biotechnology Journal, 2020
Microbial communities have a preponderant role in the life support processes of our common home planet Earth. These extremely diverse communities drive global biogeochemical cycles, and develop intimate relationships with most multicellular organisms, with a significant impact on their fitness.

Microenvironment Self‐Adaptive Nanoarmor to Address Adhesion‐ and Colonization‐Related Obstacles in Impaired Intestine Promote Bacteriotherapy Against Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A microenvironment self‐adaptive nanoarmor is developed to effectively address the adhesion‐ and colonization‐related challenges posed by multiple physiological and pathological characteristics in the intestine. L. plantarum@MPN@CS showed significant therapeutic potential in treating Parkinson's disease (PD), a model for extraintestinal disorders, as ...

Dipiperazine‐Phenyl Derivatives Based on Convergent Molecular Platforms Can Reverse Multidrug Resistance in Gram‐Negative Bacteria by Inhibiting Efflux and Permeabilizing Cell Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
By integrating a convergent molecular platform strategy, this study designed a novel dual‐target C5 to combat multidrug‐resistant Gram‐negative bacteria. C5 synergistically enhances antibiotic efficacy by inhibiting efflux pumps and increasing bacterial membrane permeability.

Mechanisms Driving Seasonal Succession and Community Assembly in Sediment Microbial Communities Across the Dali River Basin, the Loess Plateau, China

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Microorganisms are instrumental in river ecosystems and participate in biogeochemical cycles. It is thought that dynamic hydrological processes in rivers influence microbial community assembly, but the seasonal succession and community assembly of river ...

MGM as a Large‐Scale Pretrained Foundation Model for Microbiome Analyses in Diverse Contexts

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We present the Microbial General Model (MGM), a transformer‐based foundation model pretrained on over 260,000 microbiome samples. MGM learns contextualized microbial representations via self‐supervised language modeling, enabling robust transfer learning, cross‐regional generalization, keystone taxa discovery, and prompt‐guided generation of realistic,
