Layered Nanoporous Platforms for SERS Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Here, we present a detailed investigation of the SERS performance of layered nanoporous metals. The controlled deposition of well‐defined, stacked porous layers enabled a systematic analysis of the effects of multimetallic systems in SERS experiments. Numerical models are also used to support the experimental findings.

Assessing TiO2/Chitosan‐Based Hydrogels for Water Remediation: Sunlight‐Driven Degradation of Antibiotics in Water

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Chitosan–TiO2 composite hydrogels combine adsorption of organic pollutants with photocatalysis, allowing to remove 85% of a broadly diffused antibiotic (sulfamethoxazole) under direct sunlight irradiation, opening great promises for point‐of‐use, outdoor applications.

Microbial electrolysis kinetics and cell design

open access: yes, 2010
Large amounts of hydrogen are produced worldwide, which are nearly all from fossil origin. Use of biomass instead of fossil fuels to produce hydrogen can contribute to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the hydrogen has to be produced at

Soil Microbial Life History Strategies Drive Microbial Carbon Use Efficiency Following Afforestation

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Soil microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) is the core of the soil carbon (C) cycle that captures a dual microbial control point between soil organic C (SOC) accumulation and loss.

BioEISense: A Microfluidic Platform for Real‐Time Monitoring of Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm Formation and the Efficacy of Antibiofilm Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
BioEISense is a microfluidic device with integrated impedance sensors, for real‐time, label‐free monitoring of S. aureus biofilms. In this study, the biofilm culture conditions were optimized to support sensitive and reproducible detection of biofilm formation and eradication under dynamic flow‐through conditions. The system was also validated for both

Biochar carbon dynamics in physically separated fractions and microbial use efficiency in contrasting soils under temperate pastures

open access: yes, 2018
There is overwhelming evidence for the long-term persistence of biochar in soil. However, the partitioning of biochar into light and heavy carbon (C) fractions and microbial biomass C (MBC), and the dynamics of C use efficiency (CUEE: net incorporation ...

Parallel Electrical Integration of Photo Bio Electrochemical Systems (photo‐BESs): Performance Gains and Load Dependency

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Parallel wiring of bioelectrochemical devices with conventional generators unexpectedly boosts output. A biophotovoltaic paired with a solar cell delivers up to 50% more power at low loads than their separate contributions; a plant microbial fuel cell shows similar current gains.

Rethinking microbial carbon use efficiency in soil models [PDF]

open access: yes
Soil models include a key parameter known as carbon use efficiency, which impacts estimates of global carbon storage by determining the flow of carbon into soil pools versus the atmosphere.
