Widespread bursts of diversification in microbial phylogenies [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
Until recently, much of the microbial world was hidden from view. A global research effort has changed this, unveiling and quantifying microbial diversity across enormous range of critically-important contexts, from the human microbiome, to plant-soil interactions, to marine life.

Identification and Application of a Novel Patulin Degrading Enzyme From Meyerozyma guilliermondii

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Patulin (PAT), a hazardous mycotoxin, threatens human health. A novel yeast‐derived short‐chain dehydrogenase/reductase effectively degrades PAT into nontoxic ascladiol via catalytic triad activity. The biological detoxification process has no significant effect on the quality of fresh pear juice.

Bacterial Capture‐Killing Capsules with Remodeling Bone Immune Microenvironment for the Effective Treatment of Osteomyelitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The PC‐O@TOB capsules are designed to exhibit bactericidal effects, regulate the bone immune microenvironment by promoting M2 macrophage polarization, eliminate excessive ROS, and enhance bone regeneration, providing a novel multi‐dimensional approach for the treatment of osteomyelitis.

TCMD: A High‐Throughput and Rapid Method for Screening Antimicrobial Ingredients from Renewable Bio‐Based Resources

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study develops a strategy to screen the active compounds from bio‐mixtures via combining transcriptomic profiling and molecular docking. The proposed method demonstrates 100% correction in three different biobased mixtures and is 3–20 times faster than traditional approaches.

Overcoming Extreme Ammonia Inhibition on Methanogenesis by Artificially Constructing a Synergistically Community with Acidogenic Bacteria and Hydrogenotrophic Archaea

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study proposes a two‐step biological strategy to synergistically enhance the three stages of anaerobic digestion, ultimately eliminating the extreme ammonia inhibition and breaking through the inefficiency bottleneck of conventional biotechnology.

Inoculating solid-state homogeneous precipitation by impurity atoms through a spinodal decomposition like pathway [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Solid-state homogeneous precipitation of nano-sized precipitates is one of the most effective processes to strengthen metal alloys, where the final density and size distribution of precipitates are largely controlled by the precipitation kinetics. Here, we report a strategy to inoculate the homogeneous precipitation of coherent precipitates to enhance ...
