The influence of zooplankton enrichment on the microbial loop in a shallow, eutrophic lake
European Journal of Protistology, 2016With increasing primary productivity, ciliates may become the most important members of the microbial loop and form a central linkage in the transformation of microbial production to upper trophic levels. How metazooplankters, especially copepods, regulate ciliate community structure in shallow eutrophic waters is not completely clear.

Microbial Loop Structure along Trophic Gradients in the Adriatic Sea
2001Seasonal observations (May 1995–February 1996) carried out along the whole Adriatic basin have significantly contributed to a better understanding of the distribution of bacterial and heterotrophic nanoplankton communities in different trophic areas. The average density values along the water column ranged from 1 × 105 to 1.6 × 106 cell mL−1 and from 1.

The microbial loop concept as used in terrestrial soil ecology studies
Microbial Ecology, 1994Components and processes in the aquatic microbial loop are compared with the composition and functioning of the soil microbial loop. Relative to their bacterial and/or fungal food sources, many of the soil water-film fauna (e.g., protozoa, nematodes) are conspicuous by low biomasses and high turnover rates of carbon and mineral nutrients.

The importance of microbial loop in the Middle Adriatic Sea
2002The role of bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in the microbial food web was studied in the coastal area of the Middle Adriatic. About 32% of the bacterial annual production was incorporated in HNF biomass whereas ciliates incorporated about 8% of bacterial production by direct grazing and about 13% indirectly through HNF ...
