Microbial Necromass and Extracellular Enzyme Activities Are Associated with Depth-Dependent Soil Carbon Stabilization Along a Wildfire-Severity Gradient

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Wildfire can alter soil organic carbon (SOC) pools and microbial pathways of carbon stabilization, but depth-dependent links between microbial necromass and stable carbon pools remain unclear. We investigated a wildfire-severity gradient in a subtropical

Mystery and misery of locally‐delivered drug therapy in periodontics. Historical concepts and current state

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract The primary objective is to critically analyze approaches to local therapy for periodontal disease, particularly in light of its well‐established systemic implications. We specifically address common misconceptions and overestimations regarding the potential of local treatments in contrast to their actual clinical effectiveness.

Contrasting effects of multifactorial carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus amendments on soil microbial carbon‐use efficiency and biomass turnover in a subtropical grassland and forest soil

open access: yesAgricultural &Environmental Letters, Volume 11, Issue 2, December 2026.
Abstract Soil microbial carbon‐use efficiency (CUE) and biomass turnover have been identified as important drivers of biogeochemical processes; however, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the factors driving them. Here, we tested how multifactorial carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) amendments affect microbial CUE and biomass turnover ...

Legumes’ positive effects on soil carbon magnify via microbial pathways in warm-arid grasslands

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Legumes play a crucial role in nitrogen cycling; however, it is unclear how this effect is related to soil organic carbon dynamics in grassland across climatic gradients.

Root traits of modern alfalfa lines with contrasting stem fiber digestibility

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences &Environment, Volume 9, Issue 4, December 2026.
Abstract Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a perennial legume forage crop with high‐quality forage and a robust root system. Alfalfa roots support forage growth and contribute to soil carbon and nitrogen supplies. Novel alfalfa lines selected for stem fiber digestibility have been developed, but the consequences of these selections on root traits are ...

Macroaggregate disintegration mediates forest gap impacts on MAOC decrease in karst ecosystems

open access: yesGeoderma
Forest gap disturbances, which are projected to intensify with climate change, threaten the stability of mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) in karst soils.

Sustained Livestock Grazing Enhances Soil Organic Carbon Storage in Sub‐Arctic Grassland

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology Communications, Volume 1, Issue 4, December 2026.
We studied long‐term effects of grazing cessation on 34 grassland and heathland sites in Iceland. Grazing cessation was associated with lower SOC, nitrogen and root carbon in the top 10 cm of soil providing evidence for enhanced SOC in grazed land, showing that grazing is a climate change mitigation strategy.

Contrasting Freeze–Thaw Regimes and Straw Amendment Reshape Microbial Necromass and Soil Carbon Pools in Saline–Alkali Paddy and Maize Soils

open access: yesAgronomy
Soil carbon dynamics in seasonal freeze–thaw zones reflect the interplay of two temporal regimes: high-frequency symmetric cycles driven by diurnal temperature fluctuations, and low-frequency asymmetric cycles with extended freezing and brief thawing ...

Decomponology: A board game for understanding soil carbon dynamics

open access: yesNatural Sciences Education, Volume 55, Issue 2, December 2026.
Abstract Soils sustain life and regulate global carbon cycling, yet the processes governing soil organic matter dynamics are inherently complex, involving multiple pathways and positive and negative feedbacks. Traditional concepts such as humus often portrayed soil carbon as a static pool whose persistence was attributed largely to the inherent ...

Contrasting influences of ectomycorrhizal fungi on decomposition depending on soil fertility

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 252, Issue 3, Page 1028-1034, November 2026.
Ecosystem types along a gradient of increasing nutritional and climatic constraints with an overall transition from carbon (C)to nitrogen (N) limitation on decomposition. Summary Despite their dominance in many terrestrial ecosystems, the impact of ectomycorrhizal fungi on organic matter decomposition is notably variable across different ecological ...
