Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Microdefects of Biocorroded Pipe Steel Surfaces and Safety Assessment of Localized Stress Concentrators

open access: yesMetals, 2020
The effect of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) on the corrosion of steel 20 was investigated. Results demonstrated that the chemical composition of corrosion products, the corrosion rate, and corrosion type were altered due to the adherence of SRB and the

Leaky Sewers Hydraulically Disconnect from Groundwater: A Proof‐of‐Concept

open access: yesGroundwater, EarlyView.
In this study, we newly demonstrate that leaky pipes can become hydraulically disconnected from the underlying groundwater—a phenomenon analogous to river–groundwater interactions. Through numerical modeling, we show that, as the groundwater table declines, the leakage flux from the pipe (in absolute terms) initially increases until a critical depth ...

Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage: Groundwater for Efficient Data Center Cooling in the United States

open access: yesGroundwater, EarlyView.
As the demand for data centers continues to rise exponentially, there is an urgent need to explore sustainable and efficient alternatives to conventional cooling systems for data centers. This article explores aquifer thermal energy storage as a technically viable and underutilized solution for data center cooling in the United States.

A Review of Nonsteroidal Anti‐Inflammatory Drugs for Food‐Producing Animals With a Focus on Potential Applications for Farmed Finfish

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In finfish aquaculture, there are several inflammatory diseases impacting productivity and animal welfare, however there are limited options available to veterinarians to treat inflammation and pain in fish. Nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used in terrestrial animals raised for human consumption to treat a range of ...

Leveraging modified ex situ tomography data for segmentation of in situ synchrotron X‐ray computed tomography

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract In situ synchrotron X‐ray computed tomography enables dynamic material studies. However, automated segmentation remains challenging due to complex imaging artefacts – like ring and cupping effects – and limited training data. We present a methodology for deep learning‐based segmentation by transforming high‐quality ex situ laboratory data to ...

Nanoparticles in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry: From Mechanisms to Clinical Applications

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Nanotechnology holds significant promise in improving dental care, yet there is a need for more reliable clinical studies to validate its effectiveness and safety. ABSTRACT Recent advances in nanotechnology are reshaping the landscape of periodontology and implant dentistry, particularly through the application of nanoparticles (NPs).

Engineered surface strategies to manage dental implant‐related infections

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract When exposed to the oral environment, dental implants, like natural surfaces, become substrates for microbial adhesion and accumulation, often leading to implant‐related infections—one of the main causes of implant failure. These failures impose significant costs on patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems.

Emerging locally delivered antimicrobial and immunomodulatory approaches for the prevention/treatment of peri‐implant diseases

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Peri‐implant diseases are dysbiosis‐mediated inflammatory disorders that occur in susceptible hosts. Antimicrobials and immunomodulatory agents therefore might be pertinent as adjunctive measures in the treatment of such disorders. The aim of this narrative review was to examine the existing evidence and assess the effectiveness of emerging ...

Systemic and local antibiotics in the management of peri‐implantitis: A systematic review and network meta‐analysis

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Peri‐implantitis is a biofilm‐induced inflammatory condition with challenging management due to the complexity of implant surface topographies and the polymicrobial and well‐structured profile of the biofilm colonizing these surfaces.
