Microbursts: a hazard for aircraft

Nature, 1985
Microbursts are believed to have been responsible for several aircraft accidents in recent years. We report here laboratory experiments which show that when a descending column of dense fluid reaches the ground and begins to spread out horizontally, an intense vortex with a horizontal axis forms at the leading edge of the outflowing air.

Relativistic electron microbursts

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1992
We report the first satellite observations of relativistic (>1 MeV) electron precipitation in microbursts with measured durations of less than 1 s. Microbursts of lower‐energy electrons (10–100 keV) have been found to occur preferentially in the early daylight hours and to be closely associated with VLF chorus emissions.

Microburst phenomena: 3. An association between microbursts and VLF chorus

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1968
Observations made with the Injun 3 satellite of bursts of precipitating Ee ≥ 40-kev electrons and of VLF chorus emission have revealed their simultaneous occurrence. Observed microbursts are always accompanied by a group of VLF chorus emissions; chorus is not necessarily accompanied by microbursts. The maximum region of microburst occurrence from 0400 ≤
