Another tungsten microelectrode
Medical & Biological Engineering, 1972A technique is described for fitting a sharpened tungsten wire and a glass micropipette together so that a precisely controlled amount of bare wire is exposed at the tip. The method is tedious and demanding but produces very reliable electrodes yielding isolated extracellular recordings from single nerve cells and their axons.

Ca2+-selective microelectrodes
Cell Calcium, 1985Ca2+-selective microelectrodes based on the synthetic neutral carrier ETH 1001 can be used for quantitative intracellular measurements of resting Ca2+-activities and of slowly changing Ca2+-levels (response time in the order of seconds). Microelectrodes with tip diameters greater than 0.3 micron show selectivities that yield a detection limit between ...

Intracellular Oxygen Microelectrodes
1973In this presentation the work of many associates of mine will be discussed, most notably Dr. Pankajam Nair. I will say little about the construction of the micro O2 electrode since the method is essentially the same as has been published (7). Rather, I will first briefly discuss tests of its reliability and new calibration techniques; then some of our ...

Extracellular microelectrode sampling bias
Experimental Neurology, 1970Abstract The antidromic response latencies of 640 pyramidal tract neurons, isolated in pericruciate cortex of the cat, were measured after stimulation of the medullary pyramids. The expected time distribution of antidromic response latencies was then calculated from published values for axon diameters in silver-stained preparations; compensation for ...

Glass Insulated Platinum Microelectrode
Science, 1960Microelectrodes for electrophysiological use have been prepared easily and quickly by electrolytically sharpening platinum iridium alloy wire and coating with molten glass. The desirable combination of the electrical characteristics and strength of the platinum iridium wire with the exceptional durability of glass insulation has long been known, but ...

1996
A review with 71 refs. discussing amperometric and potentiometric microelectrodes and their principles of operation, as well as some practical applications of microelectrodes, such as in studies of mass boundary layers, detn. of effective diffusion coeffs. in biofilms, and studies of activity distribution in methanogenic aggregates.
