AUTOMATING MICROFACIES ANALYSIS OF PETROGRAPHIC IMAGES

SPWLA 61st Annual Online Symposium Transactions, 2020
Disclosed herein are methods and systems for analysis of a petrographic image of a sample of a subterranean formation, the method comprising performing an unsupervised machine-learning algorithm on the petrographic image, and determining a microfacies or a microfacies characteristic of the sample based on a segmented image provided by the unsupervised ...

Microfacies Interpretation: Summarizing Microfacies Criteria: Microfacies Types

2009
Microfacies studies aim for the recognition of overall patterns that reflect the history of carbonate rocks, by means of a thorough examination of their sedimentological and paleontological characteristics. The previous chapters have shown which thin-section criteria are used in describing the microfacies of limestones. The evaluation of microfacies in

Microfacies of Cambrian Limestones in Jordan

Facies, 1992
The limestones of the Wadi Nasb Formation of the uppermost Lower Cambrian of Jordan are under- and overlain by massive sandstones of a near-shore facies. Facies analysis is based on samples from an outcrop at the northeastern shore of the Dead Sea and two oil test wells in the Wadi Sirhan Depression in eastern Jordan.

Facies and microfacies of slope deposits

CATENA, 1999
Abstract This paper reviews the facies and microfacies of the main types of slope deposits. Lamination and sorting, when preserved, are good evidence for overland flow. Features due to deformation (folds, boudins, coatings and tails due to the rotation of clasts) are associated with the early stages of deformation in earth slides.

Petrographic microfacies classification with deep convolutional neural networks

Computers & Geosciences, 2020
Petrographic analysis is based on the microscopic description and classification of rocks and is a crucial technique for sedimentary and diagenetic studies. When compared to hand specimens, thin sections provide better and more accurate means for analysis of mineral proportion, distribution, texture, pore space analysis, and cement composition.

Microfacies and Archaeology

2004
Archaeologists are faced with the problem of the provenance of materials used in ancient buildings, sculptures or ceramics. Archaeometric methods applied to source studies include analyses of element distributions, stable isotope patterns and studies of the mineralogical and petrographical composition (Herz 1987; Riederer 1987; Herz and Waelkens 1988 ...

New Perspectives in Microfacies

2004
A rapid evolution in our understanding of carbonate rocks was triggered in the mid- to late 50’s by the discovery of carbonate reservoirs in various parts of the world, followed by intensive research of recent carbonates. Modern and ancient carbonate environments, diagenetic processes and facies models were studied between about 1955 and 1965.

Quantitative Microfacies Analysis

2004
The previous chapters of this book introduced various aspects of recognizing qualitative microfacies criteria and their signifcance, whereas this chapter will treat quantitative criteria. The first part describes selected principles of grain-size analysis and demonstrates the potential of grain size in the context of microfacies studies.
