Limited capacity for rapid acclimation to marine heatwaves in coastal invertebrates
Across 10 coastal invertebrate species, we provide a rare multi‐species test of rapid acclimation to realistic marine heatwaves. Responses are consistently weak, revealing that short‐term plasticity cannot keep pace with warming and may lead to underestimated vulnerability in coastal ecosystems. Moderate retention forestry creates structurally sharp forest edges that act as ecological filters, shaping orientation‐specific activity of ground‐dwelling arthropods. Using drift‐fence pitfall traps, we show that activity aligned with ecotones is more frequent than activity across forest–clearcut boundaries, particularly among detritivores.
