Failed Awake Flexible Intubation Followed by Early Surgical Tracheostomy in Advanced Laryngeal Cancer: A Case Report

open access: yesCase Reports in Anesthesiology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Primary laryngeal cancers causing critical airway stenosis pose significant challenges to airway management. Although flexible bronchoscope guided awake intubation is generally recommended for anticipated difficult airways, the presence of a friable and obstructive mass may render this technique ineffective. We report the case of a 69‐year‐old male who

Obstructive Fibrinous Tracheal Pseudomembrane Following Short‐Term Intubation: A Case Report and Management Considerations

open access: yesCase Reports in Otolaryngology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Introduction Obstructive fibrinous tracheal pseudomembrane (OFTP) is a rare but serious complication of endotracheal intubation that can cause airway obstruction, postextubation stridor, and respiratory distress. Due to its nonspecific presentation, it is often misdiagnosed and early recognition and intervention are critical to prevent respiratory ...

CONTINUOUS SUXAMETHONIUM INFUSION FOR MICROLARYNGEAL SURGERY

open access: yesBritish Journal of Anaesthesia, 1982
The suxamethonium infusion requirements to maintain a 100% neuromuscular block in patients undergoing microlaryngeal surgery were determined. Anaesthesia was maintained with halothane and the neuromuscular block monitored with a peripheral nerve stimulator delivering train-of-four stimuli.

Transnasal Humidified Rapid Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange (THRIVE) for the Operative Management of Retrograde Cricopharyngeus Dysfunction

open access: yesOTO Open, Volume 9, Issue 4, October-December 2025.
Abstract Objective Transnasal Humidified Rapid Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange (THRIVE) is a method of apneic oxygenation gaining popularity in upper aerodigestive surgery. Retrograde cricopharyngeus muscle dysfunction (RCPD) is characterized by the inability to belch, managed by intraoperative injection of botulinum toxin to the cricopharyngeus ...

Using a customizable L stent for laryngotracheal stenosis: Patterns of success and failure

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Volume 11, Issue 3, Page 462-467, September 2025.
Abstract Background A recent innovation in the management of tracheostomy‐dependent patients with laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS) has been the customizable laryngotracheal stent, made by dividing a T‐tube in half (“L stent”). These L stents can be placed into the subglottis as well as the posterior glottis to prevent rapid re‐stenosis following surgery,

Feasibility of Laryngeal Joint Replacement: A Proof of Concept Study in Cadavers

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, Volume 135, Issue 8, Page 2819-2823, August 2025.
Treatment in advanced cases of posterior laryngeal stenosis relies on permanent tracheostomy or irreversible arytenoidectomy/cordectomy, which are compromises between voice, swallowing, and airway. While having intact laryngeal neuromuscular function, there is immobility of the vocal cord due to scarring and ankylosis of the cricoarytenoid joint.

Does the TruBlue Laser Set Microlaryngoscopy Equipment on Fire? A Systematic Evaluation

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, Volume 135, Issue 5, Page 1752-1758, May 2025.
This study evaluates the fire risk of the novel TruBlue laser under controlled laboratory settings. Experimental tests reveal that the Medtronic™ ETT is highly safe, Rüsch® ETT has intermediate safety profile, while the MLT poses significant fire hazards.
