Single Fibre Microneurography and Sensation
1989The concept of a sensory threshold is a central element in sensory physiology and psychophysics. Yet it is a puzzle that a distinct threshold cannot be demonstrated. A fixed threshold would imply that stimuli above a certain strength are detected with certainty by a human observer while all stimuli below this strength escape detection.

[Application of microneurography to circulatory disorders].
Brain and nerve = Shinkei kenkyu no shinpo, 2009Sympathetic neural function has been conventionally evaluated by muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), plasma norepinephrine levels, and heart rate variability. Of these, MSNA is the only direct method for the assessment of sympathetic neural outflow to the peripheral vasculature.

[Application of microneurography to the evaluation of diabetic neuropathy].
Brain and nerve = Shinkei kenkyu no shinpo, 2009The use of microneurography for recording of the compound nerve action potentials enables a more accurate evaluation of even severe cases of diabetic polyneuropathy. A tungsten microelectrode with a tip diameter of approximately 1 microm is percutaneously inserted into the median nerve trunk in the elbow without the administration of anesthesia.

[Additional further applications of microneurography in the future].
Brain and nerve = Shinkei kenkyu no shinpo, 2009Microneurography has been mainly used in the field of basic science for obtaining information on the physiological phenomena of normal volunteers. Some clinical studies have been reported in the field of the autonomic nervous system. In the future, further applications of microneurography in the clinical situations will be desired.
