Electrowetting for Tunable Microoptics
Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems, 2008The design, fabrication, and optical properties of tunable liquid microoptical components based on electrowetting are presented. Two optical microsystems are discussed: a single liquid microlens with tunable focal length, centered and stabilized in a micromachined positioning structure, and laterally repositionable tunable liquid microlens arrays.

Optical computing and related microoptic devices
Applied Optics, 1990We investigate scaling with the cross-sectional area of energy and speed for optical devices and of optical design, speed, and thermal dissipation for device arrays. Theory and experiments clearly point to lower energy and faster speed for smaller devices and to simpler optical design, smaller propagation time delays, and higher thermal dissipation ...

Microoptical Distance Sensor with Integrated Microoptics Applied to an Optical Microphone
IEEE Sensors, 2005., 2006The developed fiber optical microphone (FOM) using intensity modulation of light is based on triangulation. Emitted light from an LED is directed through an optical fiber onto the membrane. The reflected light is coupled into the receiving fiber. Vibration of the membrane results in a toggling of the light spot on the receiving fiber.

Microoptics: introduction by the feature editors
Applied Optics, 1990This introduction briefly defines the scope of the feature in this 10 Nov. 1990 issue on microoptics. The first part of the feature, on gradient-index imaging systems, has appeared in the 1 Oct. 1990 issue. All feature papers are based on presentations made at the joint conference MOC/GRIN '89.

Programmable microoptics for ultrashort pulses
SPIE Proceedings, 2010Programmable liquid-crystal devices for high-resolution spatial shaping of ultrashort-pulsed laser beams promise to be an alternative approach to passive microoptical structures. In former experiments we demonstrated that depositionfabricated nanolayer lenses and axicons can serve as low-dispersion, damage resistant, ultrabroadband microoptical ...

Application oriented complex polymer microoptics
Microsystem Technologies, 2003Three technologies for precise microoptical elements with more than one optical function and fabricated on wafer-scale are described. The combination of reflow technology and direct laser beam writing results in hybrid microoptical elements, comprising, e.g. refractive and diffractive elements.

Connection routing for microoptic systems
Applied Optics, 1990A recognized model for an all-optical digital computer consists of arrays of optical logic devices interconnected in free space with bulk optical components. A problem with this approach is that device arrays must be spaced to allow for components placed between them such as lenses, gratings, and beam splitters.

Diamond-like carbon microoptics elements
Thin Solid Films, 2004Micro-optic elements were fabricated by reactive sputter deposition or high density plasma chemical vapour deposition of diamond-like carbon films upon a micromachined silicon mould. The main advantages of the deposited films were: their low temperature deposition processes, their chemical inertness, their low internal stresses and the spectral range ...

Characterization of microoptical components
2003 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe 2003) (IEEE Cat. No.03TH8666), 2004Microoptical components are more and more important in technical applications due to the miniaturization of optical systems for communication, sensors, visualization devices and other purposes. Since the quality in the fabrication of an optical element cannot be better than the measurement accuracy with which the element can be tested, it is very ...
