Adsorption of antibiotics on microplastics [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Pollution, 2018
Microplastics and antibiotics are two classes of emerging contaminants with proposed negative impacts to aqueous ecosystems. Adsorption of antibiotics on microplastics may result in their long-range transport and may cause compound combination effects. In this study, we investigated the adsorption of 5 antibiotics [sulfadiazine (SDZ), amoxicillin (AMX),

Diversity of Pharmaceuticals Enhances Antibiotic Resistance in the Invertebrate Gut via Biofilm‐Mediated Mechanisms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Pharmaceutical diversity acts as an independent driver of antibiotic resistance in soil invertebrates. While bulk soil remains unaffected, the collembolan gut microbiome exhibits significant resistance gene enrichment under complex chemical exposure and diurnal warming.

Facemasks: A Looming Microplastic Crisis

open access: yes, 2021
Single-use disposable facemasks have been used as a preventive measure against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, many researchers have found evidence that these facemasks are being dumped into lakes, rivers, and open garbage dumps.

Single‐Particle Mid‐Infrared Photothermal Imaging Reveals Hidden Heterogeneity in Real‐World Micro‐ and Nanoplastics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mid‐infrared photothermal imaging enables multidimensional profiling of micro‐ and nanoplastics in bottled water. A total of 9.9 × 104 particles L−1 is detected, with 64% in the nanoscale regime. Spectral evolution, including peak narrowing and band shifts, reveals local chain reorganization in polyethylene terephthalate (PET), highlighting intrinsic ...

Microplastics

open access: yesCambridge Prisms: Plastics, 2023
Plastic production has greatly increased in the past decades and has become central to modern human life. Realization is dawning that plastics break down into smaller pieces resulting in micro-or nanoplastics (MNP) that can enter humans directly via the environment. Indeed, MNP have been detected in every part of the human body, including the placenta,

Recent trends in marine microplastic modeling and machine learning tools: Potential for long-term microplastic monitoring

open access: yes, 2023
The increase in the global demand for plastics, and more recently during the pandemic, is a major concern for the future of plastic waste pollution and microplastics.

Chitosan‐Carbon Dot Composite Materials Form a Leaf Surface Barrier to Mitigate the Enrichment and Invasion of Nanoplastics: From Leaf Interface to Systemic Response

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Foliar spraying of CS‐CDs can form a film on the leaves of Brassica rapa, effectively reducing the enrichment and absorption of PS in the leaves, while increasing the biomass and nutrient content of the plants. In addition, CS‐CDs can also enrich the interfoliar microbial community and activate the plant's own defense metabolic pathways.

Adhesion‐Driven Removal of Microplastics From Aquatic Systems by Using Microgel Glues

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Soft polymeric microgels function as “glues” that aggregate diverse microplastics through multivalent adhesion, promoting their interfacial deposition and co‐precipitation for efficient removal from water. Remarkably, this approach remains effective even for nanoscale plastic particles as small as 50 nm.
