The history of the microprocessor

Bell Labs Technical Journal, 2002
Invented in 1971, the microprocessor evolved from the inventions of the transistor (1947) and the integrated circuit (1958). Essentially a computer on a chip, it is the most advanced application of the transistor. The influence of the microprocessor today is well known, but in 1971 the effect the microprocessor would have on everyday life was a vision ...

The Birth of the Microprocessor

IEEE Micro, 2021
The story starts in February 1968 when I joined Fairchild Semiconductor R&D Lab in Palo Alto, CA, USA. At that time, nearly all the integrated circuits (ICs) in production used bipolar technology. Metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) technology was up-and-coming but still had many problems: it was extremely slow and was not yet reliable. I believed that the

Reverification of a microprocessor

Proceedings. 1988 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, 2003
The FM8501 microprocessor was defined and verified by W.A. Hunt (1986) using the Boyer-Moore theorem-prover. The authors have carried out a reverification of the machine using the State Delta Verification System. Their work correlates strongly with work done by Hunt, demonstrating that the verification community is capable of supporting its own results,

Microprocessor applications

Computer, 1974
Microprocessors, to some degree, are causing computer history to repeat itself. The new areas in which microprocessors are being applied are as surprising and imaginative as were the first minicomputer applications to the computer industry when the minicomputer was a new concept.

The microprocessor rationale

Proceedings of the May 19-22, 1975, national computer conference and exposition on - AFIPS '75, 1975
Classically, since the beginning of the computer era, logic system designs have been implemented with one of two entirely separate approaches. Economic factors determined whether hardwired logic or a computer would be used to perform the required operations. In many cases, the computer approach was far too costly.

Microprocessors in brief

IBM Journal of Research and Development, 1985
This paper presents a tutorial overview of the past, present, and future of microprocessors and describes the key elements of their structure and operation. It is intended to serve as a technical introduction to the rapidly expanding field of microprocessor and microcomputer technology and to provide an overview of what these elements are, what they ...

The microprocessor

Proceedings of the 1975 annual conference on - ACM 75, 1975
The paper deals with the need for a microcontroller as opposed to a microprocessor in a large segment of applications. The trend toward upgrading the microprocessor via the traditional data processing routes; such as, the addition of DMA, Arithmetic Capability, and Direct Addressing of large amounts of memory, is diametrically opposed to the ...

Microprocessors In Pre-engineering

Frontiers in Education Conference, 1982. Proceedings, 1981
The use of microcomputer systems for an elective sequence in our preengineering program at a liberal arts college was motivated by student requests for assembly language programming and for computer courses oriented more toward the sciences. We describe a very modestly priced system and two courses which are based on the Intel 8080A.

Functional Testing of Microprocessors

IEEE Transactions on Computers, 1984
Summary: This paper presents a new and systematic method to generate tests for microprocessors. A functional level model for the microprocessor is used and it is represented by a reduced graph. A new and comprehensive model of the instruction execution process is developed.

Microprocessors present and future

Computer, 1974
Microprocessors are very quickly reaching the stage of maturity as a design component in the field of digital systems even though they are relatively new. They are the one component with the most far reaching implications for future developments in the digital systems area since the transistor.
